About the team

SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator, our focus is to reduce work related fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation such as the explosives and dangerous goods legislation and improving the safety culture in NSW workplaces.

The Dangerous Goods and Explosives Team (DG&E) sits within the Authorisations and Verifications Directorate of SafeWork NSW and primarily undertakes assessment and verification of Explosives licences and Manifest Quantity Workplaces that store hazardous chemicals. We also provide technical expertise and guidance to help improve work health and safety (WHS) compliance within the dangerous goods and explosives sectors.

The Team faces many challenges including fraudulent activity, unsafe practices and lack of knowledge about the risks and hazards when storing hazardous chemicals and explosives.

Our ideal candidate will have strong technical industry knowledge and practical workplace safety experience. You will apply your industry knowledge and experience to work in partnership with NSW workplaces and peak industry bodies to assist them in creating and maintaining work health and safety standards so that workers return home safely each day. You will be capable of supporting the DG&E leadership team and be willing to take on extra responsibilities as required.

About the Role

You will be responsible for building industry capability to support the prevention of harm this includes delivering key programs to support organisational priorities. As an Assistant State Inspector in the Dangerous Goods and Explosives team you will be responsible for building industry capability to support the prevention of harm, which includes:

  • Working with industry, associations, unions, community, other regulators and government agencies, including Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW Police Forceand the NSW EPA in the response to and prevention of workplace injury, illness, and incidents within the Dangerous Goods & Explosive sectors.
  • Preventing harm by securing compliance with regulatory obligations at NSW dangerous goods & explosives facilities.
  • Playing a support role in providing advice on prevention and response activities whilst building the capability of internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Utilising your skills and knowledge to identify, plan and deliver strategies to encourage best practice in the safe storage and handling of dangerous goods & explosives.
  • Contributing to the implementation high-risk harm prevention projects and initiatives.
  • Review and assess complex explosive licensing applications.
  • Seeking out opportunities to improve customer service levels, business processes and internal policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the conduct of investigations into causes of workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities involving dangerous goods or explosives and where required, provide specialist advice regarding compliance with WHS and Explosives legislation.
  • Where necessary, you may be involved in court processes, including the preparation of court documents, attending court, and participating in evidentiary processes.
  • Being responsible for providing the NSW communities with strong regulatory service to proactively engage and influence key industry stakeholders.
  • Utilising your leadership, industry knowledge, project management and stakeholder engagement skills to develop and implement state-wide strategic industry initiatives in the dangerous goods and explosives sector.

About you

You will be a work health safety leader who thrives on sharing your knowledge through mentoring and coaching, paired with demonstrated experience in dangerous goods and the explosive sectors and driving work, health and safety improvements with positive outcomes in this dynamic, high-risk environment. To be successful, you will:

  • Strong communication skills to proactively engage and influence key industry stakeholders, influence safety behaviour, undertake change management processes, and lead stakeholder engagements
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Well established resilience skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team
  • High level written communication skills and an ability to understand comprehensive and/or technical reports
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner
  • Solid knowledge and use of technology
  • A can do, outcomes focused positive attitude with a growth mindset.
  • Willing and able to travel remotely on need basis

  • Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service
  • Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $230 per fortnight)
  • Be able to access flexible working conditions within operational requirements

Essential requirements

  • Diploma in Government (Workplace Inspection) plus additional competencies as defined in the Inspectors Memorandum of Understanding
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity in regard to physical and psychological impacts of the
  • inherent duties of the role
  • Regular travel throughout NSW with the occasional inter-state travel. Employees are expected to hold a valid driver's licence throughout employment
  • Appointment and ongoing assignment may be subject to restrictions and the satisfactory participation in mandatory pre-employment and ongoing probity screening, in accordance with relevant Legislation and/or related policies
