SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. Our focus is to protect NSW workers by preventing and reducing work related fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses by securing compliance with work health and safety and associated legislation.

About the Team

The Major Hazard Facilities (MHF) Team is a high-impact, cross-government taskforce dedicated to safeguarding communities and industries from the risks associated with large-scale hazardous chemicals and explosives. We lead the prevention, response and recovery from critical incidents at high-risk sites across NSW.

Our team plays a pivotal role in administering and enforcing key legislation, including the WHS Regulations 2025 (Chapter 9 and Schedule 15) and the Explosives legislation, ensuring that safety standards are not only met but continuously improved.

With deep technical expertise, we assess, review, and verify licensed MHF sites, investigate potential major hazard facilities, and provide strategic guidance to industry stakeholders.

About the Role

Reporting to the Team Coordinator the team is looking for a self-motivated Inspector with a genuine interest, and preferably a background in Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Chemicals or operational experience in processing industries.

  • You will undertake proactive and targeted site inspections, responding to customer requests, working with major industry stakeholders to improve safety standards, completing preliminary incident investigations and delivering presentations,
  • You will provide advice regarding safe work practices, how to comply with the Work Health and Safety and Explosives legislation
  • You will contribute to a positive, supportive, and fun workplace

To be successful you will have:

  • Minimum three years' experience operating within a compliance-driven or regulated setting is preferred
  • Have strong communication skills to engage and influence key stakeholders to improve regulatory outcomes
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Well established resilience skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team
  • High level written communication skills, producing high quality reports in a clear and concise manner with an ability to understand comprehensive and/or technical reports
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a timely manner
  • Solid knowledge and use of technology

You will:

  • Work a 38-hour working week, including some weekends and participate in the After-Hours Emergency Response Service
  • Receive an attractive salary package along with the required tools of the trade, including a vehicle with access to private use (currently at a cost of approximately $227 per fortnight)
  • Be able to access flexible working conditions within operational requirements

Essential requirements

  • Ability to travel, work remotely and out of usual business hours
  • Hold a NSW 'C' class drivers' licence with a satisfactory safe driving record and a requirement to maintain the safe driving record throughout employment
  • Satisfactory criminal record check
  • Satisfactory medical assessment capacity regarding physical and psychological impacts of the inherent duties of the role
  • Undertake the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP). This intensive program is delivered by our Registered Training Organisation and combines mandatory components of induction, class training, online learning, completion of set assessments and tasks, and extensive on-the-job field training with regular travel throughout NSW.
