Blak Fig is a social enterprise training café that opened in early January 2025. It is an initiative created by First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing with the aim of improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal people across the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula region, by creating meaningful employment and training opportunities in culturally safe environment.
First Peoples’ Health and Wellbeing (FPHW) is a dynamic Aboriginal community- controlled health service aiming to improve access to trauma-informed comprehensive primary health care and Social Emotional Wellbeing Services in Frankston and Thomastown.

About the role
The Café Managers role at Blak Fig Café goes beyond coffee making. This role is responsible for overall management of the café on a day-to-day basis as well as leading and supporting trainees within the cafe. They are responsible for the successful performance, quality, service and overall standards to ensure the efficient running of the social enterprise. Blak Fig creates a welcoming environment that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to engage in employment and training using Café management and Barista skills to support their journey. This position is supported by the Executive Officer to coordinate staff trainees through their journey and engage warmly with customers and contribute to Blak Fig’s mission of supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of the Aboriginal community.
About you
We are looking for a Café Manager who is not only passionate about coffee but also committed to making a positive impact within the community. The ideal candidate will be friendly, warm and engaging with strong and reliable organisational skills, demonstrating the ability to multi-task and prioritise. You will have previous experience managing cafes. You will be patient, nurturing and enthusiastic about teaching/training others.
Roles and Responsibilities
Staff management including Interviewing, hiring, training, rostering and support to staff and trainees.
Working with management to select a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to deliver training to trainees.
Ensure food handling and safety regulations are adhered to and staff training requirements for food handling are met.
Assist with policy and procedure development.
Administration as required by the Café includes ordering and payment of supplies, food safety plan etc.
Oversee upkeep and maintenance of the café and all equipment.
Managing the POS system and stock control.
Continually improve/update food and beverage menu and coordinate vendors and suppliers as needed.
Work with the Director Corporate Services to develop a budget and targeted projections.
Nurture/Establish relationships with local community organisations, corporate sponsors and Aboriginal businesses.
Promote Blak Fig, including a communications strategy and social media.
Work with staff/trainees to prepare and serve high-quality coffee and beverages, and general food/beverage menu with excellent customer service.
Work with staff to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards throughout the café.
Uphold the values and vision of Blak Fig Café as a social enterprise and community-focused space.
Assist in the coordination of Blak Fig mobile coffee van to attend events.
Work in the Blak Fig mobile coffee van assisting trainees to work at events and as the face of Blak Fig.
Uphold OH&S standards as per Worksafe Victoria guidelines.
Other duties as required.
Essential
Prior experience as a manager in a busy café or similar environment.
Barista and Food Safety Supervisor certificates.
Sound understanding of food safety handling standards.
Ability to interact in a friendly and respectful way with customers, staff, and trainees at all levels with a strong customer service focus.
Knowledge of coffee preparation techniques and equipment maintenance.
Well-developed interpersonal and organisational skills showcasing your leadership and managerial skills and knowledge.
A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, and reliability.
Experience in hands on training of staff.
Ability to multitask efficiently during peak times while maintaining quality and accuracy.
