Are you passionate about sustainability and making a real impact in waste management? The City of Canning is seeking a proactive and solutions-focused Waste Project Officer to support the implementation of our Strategic Waste Management Plan and lead innovative resource recovery projects that benefit our community and environment.
About the role
This role is responsible for delivering a range of waste and recycling initiatives that improve infrastructure, planning, and community engagement. You’ll work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to embed best-practice waste management across operations and community life—through education, project delivery, and technical expertise.
What you’ll be doing:
Support the implementation and monitoring of the Strategic Waste Management Plan.
Manage and deliver waste improvement projects aligned with strategic goals.
Provide expert technical advice on waste and resource recovery.
Develop and deliver innovative solutions for waste reduction and recycling.
Prepare reports, proposals, and briefings based on evidence-based research.
Ensure projects comply with relevant State and Commonwealth legislation.
Champion waste education and provide training across the organisation.
Engage with the community and stakeholders to promote sustainable practices.
What you’ll focus on for the next 12 months:
Deliver the 2025/2026 Waste Education Plan including managing the Bin Tagging program, crafting communications and waste education messages for our diverse community and running a bi-monthly repair lab.
Develop and deliver behaviour change programs to assist residents to reduce waste and improve waste sorting
Coordinate community recycling hubs
What you will bring to the role:
Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science or a related field.
Experience in waste or environmental management, including project delivery.
Strong problem-solving and conceptual thinking skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience writing reports and engaging stakeholders.
Background in environmental education, communications, or promotion.
Experience implementing policy and strategy.
Proven ability to manage and deliver projects effectively.
A current WA “C” Class Driver’s Licence and National Police Clearance.
