Governance Specialist

Full-Time

Total Package $138,309.02 per annum (inclusive of superannuation)

  • Work alongside a team of governance experts, in an inclusive and collaborative workplace
  • A unique opportunity to advocate for all 139 Local Government members
  • Sector leading 6 week's annual leave per annum with an extra day anniversary leave

Are you a governance specialist looking for your next challenge, in a highly interesting and varied role?

Taking great pride in delivering expert advice and guidance to Western Australia’s Local Governments, the WALGA Governance and Procurement Team is a crucial pillar in providing our members with essential information, advice, resources, and services pertaining to Governance and Procurement practices.

Our dynamic, close-knit team is dedicated to promoting the adoption of best-practice governance frameworks and helping our member Local Governments understand their statutory compliance obligations. You will have opportunities to travel across WA to deliver tailored workshops, attend WALGA Zone meetings, and engage in member networking.

This is a terrific career development opportunity to work with highly experienced colleagues and WALGA policy experts to support our 139 Local Government members, gain in-depth engagement with the full breadth of issues facing the sector, and contribute insights and advocacy on the Local Government Act reforms!

What does a typical week look like?

You will provide practical written and verbal advice to our stakeholders on the application of the Local Government Act, regulations, and associated legislation; collaborate in developing webinars; and provide subject matter expertise to WALGA’s suite of Local Government Council Member and Officer training modules (WALGA is a registered training organisation). You will regularly assist members with managing their compliance responsibilities, responding to a changing legislative environment, and developing, adopting, reviewing, and implementing governance practices, delegations, policies, and local laws.

Throughout the week, you may also provide advice and support regarding procurement best practice, helping members meet their technical, budgetary and governance responsibilities. You will contribute to the team's analysis of reforms and complex emerging issues and collaborate on the development of resources to address these issues. You may also investigate and prepare reports on Zone proposals on anything from Local Government elections to cat and dog registrations.

So, when we say that this is a highly interesting and varied role, we mean it!

Enough about us. Let’s talk about you.

You will have a well-developed understanding of the Local Government Act or demonstrated ability to interpret legislation and assess impact on functions and operations.

Your excellent policy development, research, and analytical skills, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities allowing you to be comfortable speaking to a broad audience of stakeholders, will be crucial for this position.

Experience in, and knowledge of, the Local Government sector will be highly advantageous, to bring practical insights to the role.

Additionally, possessing high standards of written communication, exceptional customer service skills, and proficient time management and organisational skills will see you succeed in this position.

As this position is required to travel throughout the State to visit member Local Governments, this role requires a valid class ‘C’ drivers license.
