About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to join our team as an APS 5 or APS 6 Security Officer. This critical role is essential for maintaining the integrity of our security posture, specifically involving the management of highly sensitive government information and resources.
The successful candidate will be responsible for applying their expertise to implement, monitor, and assure compliance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and departmental security policies. This is a high-impact role requiring sound judgement, strong analytical skills, and the ability to operate effectively under limited direction.
Key Responsibilities (APS 5/6)
The duties will vary depending on the level of appointment (APS 5 operates with more supervision than APS 6) and the specific agency function, but generally include:
Security Policy and Advice:
Interpret and apply the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and relevant agency-specific security guidelines, providing clear and practical advice to staff and stakeholders.
Draft and review security policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Physical, Personnel, and Information Security domains.
Personnel Security Management:
Manage and coordinate security vetting processes, including liaising with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) and internal HR/management.
Facilitate pre and post-employment security clearance checks and maintain accurate clearance registers.
Security Compliance and Assurance:
Conduct security risk assessments and compliance reviews to identify vulnerabilities and recommend proportionate treatments.
Manage the security incident reporting process, ensuring timely and accurate resolution and reporting.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Represent the agency in internal and external security-related forums and working groups.
Develop and deliver security training and awareness programs for agency personnel.
Project and Administration:
Manage small to medium-scale security projects, such as system upgrades, policy implementation, or audit preparation.
Prepare high-quality written products, including Ministerial Submissions, briefs, reports, and correspondence for senior executives.
Mandatory Requirements
Australian Citizenship is required.
Must hold a current Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance.
Selection Criteria (Skills and Capabilities)
Protective Security Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) across the governance, personnel, physical, and information security domains.
Communication and Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal), including the preparation of high-quality advice, and the capacity to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Problem Solving and Analysis: Demonstrated ability to undertake research, analyse complex security issues, identify risks, and develop evidence-based recommendations and solutions.
Work Management and Initiative: Proven organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines, and exercise sound judgement and initiative to achieve outcomes with limited supervision (APS 6) or under general direction (APS 5).
