JS Careers is proud to be partnering with a leading Australian business bank to source a Legal Counsel for a 12-month fixed term contract.

This role offers the opportunity to join a respected legal team within a trusted financial institution, supporting a wide range of corporate, commercial and business banking transactions.

The successful candidate will act as a key business partner, providing practical, solutions-focused legal advice across the organisation’s operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations, and supporting strategic projects that drive business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Review, draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts, lending documentation, and corporate agreements of moderate to significant complexity.

Provide timely, commercially sound legal advice to internal stakeholders on banking, finance, and general corporate matters.

Support the General Counsel and senior leadership on strategic initiatives, transactions and governance matters, often within tight timeframes.

Advise on regulatory and compliance matters, including obligations under the Corporations Act, ASIC and APRA requirements, privacy, and consumer protection laws.

Contribute to risk management and compliance programs, ensuring legal risks are identified, mitigated, and managed effectively.

Collaborate with internal teams on the development and implementation of new products, services and projects.

Manage external legal advisers to ensure delivery of high-quality, cost-effective legal services.

Maintain legal documentation, contract databases and contribute to process improvement and efficiency initiatives.

Required Skills and Experience

Admitted Lawyer with at least 4yrs PQE in business banking and lending.

Experience gained within a top-tier or mid-tier law firm and/or in-house legal team within the banking, financial services or corporate sector.

Strong understanding of banking and finance law, commercial contracts, and regulatory frameworks.

Proven ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.

Exceptional communication, drafting and negotiation skills.

Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Collaborative and adaptable approach, with a commitment to delivering practical outcomes for stakeholders.
