Position Location – Melbourne/Sydney – Remote (Work from Home)

We are seeking a hands-on, adaptable IP/Network Engineer to join our close-knit, high-performing network team. This intermediate-level role is ideal for someone who brings strong technical expertise and is also comfortable working across different areas of the business when needed.

The Role

XYZ Telecom is a wholesale data network provider, offering Retail Service Providers (RSP’s) and Virtual ISP’s (VISP’s) an array of on-net fixed wireless and in-building data services, along with a large offering from tier 1 third party providers for fibre and other fixed line services. XYZ Telecom also has access to one of the country’s largest Fixed Wireless networks capable of delivering speeds of up to 10Gbit/s across more than 750 sites.

The Network Engineer role is pivotal within the network engineering team, providing support to our wholesale data customers, ensuring that their services are always online and operating efficiently, effectively and being able to support our partners with their data service requirements.

Dealing with wholesale customers, third party stakeholders, data centre providers, and other internal teams over the phone and via the XYZ Telecom ticketing system, the Network Engineer role is not only responsible for the design, documentation and deployment of the XYZ Telecom network but also assistance in the restoration of faults to ensuring that that XYZ Telecom provides a gold glass service to all our customers.

This role also includes being a point of escalation, assistance and training to other staff members, and teams. With a strong logical mindset breaking down problems to identify the root cause as quickly as possible.

As part of the Network Engineering team this position shall be responsible to ensure that we design, document, implement, and troubleshoot IP network solutions to the highest standard. As well as providing escalated technical support to our Network Operations Centre staff to resolve customer and network incidents within appropriate service levels whilst adhering to change management practices.

The role is a hands-on role, requiring technical skills and the ability to communicate at multiple levels within your team, management, and customers alike.

Our wholesale customers are located throughout Australia, therefore supporting customers nationally will be critical in this role. Customers in different locations may have different needs and requirements, learning and understanding such differences and how to support them is a major function of the role.

Responsibilities and duties of this role include:

Assist in the planning and design of new core network infrastructure to meet future business requirements

Manage the capacity of the core IP and Ethernet networks as well as BGP peering with third parties

Expand specific networks across the XYZ Telecom group such as Metro Ethernet, FTTP (Greenfield), FTTB (Brownfield) and Radio Access Networks as well as third party suppliers

Provide escalated support to the business for network faults where they are outside the experience of our level 1-2 operations engineers

Consult with other groups within the organization to ensure network requirements for all projects are correctly scoped and managed through the delivery process

Perform both logical and physical installations of networking equipment across POPs and data centre

Travel to data centre and remote sites to complete hands-on installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks

Handle fibre optic cabling and connectivity, keeping all racks and infrastructure neat, labelled, and well-maintained

Collaborate with the team to design, document, implement, and troubleshoot IP network solutions

Configure and support routing using OSPF and BGP, and manage MPLS-based services

Contribute to building resilient and secure networks, following operational best practices

Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, and change records

Interact daily with other support teams both locally and internationally

Take responsibility for customer communication, escalate as required to management or other teams as appropriate

Troubleshoot problems for wholesale customers, with an ability to logically break down faults

Designing, configuring, and testing networking software, hardware, and operating system software

Create, update, and develop processes and documentation as required

Develop and follow change management processes and protocols, as well as identifying process improvement opportunities

Participation in after hours on-call roster

About You

The successful applicant for this role enjoys a diverse flexible, agile and dynamic working environment with opportunities to learn, whilst also being part of building the future network. They’ll also have the following attributes/qualifications:

2–5 years of hands-on experience in an IP networking or infrastructure role

Experience with Arista, Cisco, Mikrotik and Juniper networking hardware

Strong working knowledge of:

Data networking and troubleshooting.

Data Routing protocols, OSPF, BGP, MPLS etc.

IPV4 and IPV6 IP Addressing and Subnetting.

L2 and L3 Routing and switching.

Familiarity with data centre operations, including racking, cabling, and cross-connect management

Comfortable with both field-based work and logical network design/configuration

Able to produce and maintain clear technical documentation

Can Do attitude - Flexible mindset, with the ability to handle varied tasks and changing priorities.

Willing to travel as needed and take part in after-hours work.

Impeccable dedication to detail.

Solid understanding of change management requirements.

Strong time management skills and reliable work ethic.

Excellent written, verbal communication skills.

Customer Experience focused.

Willingness to learn and be part of a larger team.

Happy to get your hands dirty and get the job done, no matter what.

The following skills/qualifications are preferred:

ITIL Certification

Cisco Certification (CCNA/CCNP)

Arista ACE

Familiarity with common network monitoring and diagnostic tools (e.g., SNMP, NetFlow, packet captures, Wireshark)

Previous Network Engineer role experience in a carrier environment
