The Role
The Team Leader Network Design will provide supervision, direction, technical support, guidance and mentoring to 7 direct reports including Network Design Engineers, Senior Network Design Engineers and other engineering teams when required.
This position is responsible to control, plan, lead and participate in the execution of the Network Design engineering team and process for all fixed and / or wireless designs in response to requests for designs from internal and external customers.
The Team Leader Network Design manages and oversees continuous improvement of the design process, ensuring adherence to standards while developing and delivering innovative, fit-for purpose network solutions that not only meet or exceed customer requirements but also provide commercial value for VicTrack, its customers, and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage, coach and develop Network Designers
- Create and / or endorse complex technical design documents and implementation plans for high-risk and high-value projects. Provide expert advice in the design, planning, assessment, peer review and implementation of network architecture including integration with wireless and fixed network
- Ensure Network Designers produce timely and accurate device configuration updates, and handover documentation packs in order to facilitate the delivery of compliant fixed and/or wireless solutions
- Responsible for project-based quality network design solutions and engineering tasks review in order to complete projects on time and within budget
- Provide escalation support for projects, including development of recommendations and identifying and tracking necessary corrective action to ensure optimal network performance
- Manage and maintain internal stakeholder accountability for network design engineers to build and lead technical solutions in conjunction with company strategy and customer requirements including executing Proof of Concept, Proof of Technology and Type Approvals
- Identify and provide recommendations for opportunities to engage in co-innovation with strategic vendors and partners in the interest of evolving the domain of wireless technology
- Play a key role in life-cycle management of fixed and/or wireless technologies, products and systems that support existing revenue and maintain SLAs and the reliability of the network
Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualifications in Electronics or Telecommunications Engineering (mandatory)
- Eligible for membership to the Institution of Engineers Australia or equivalent (desirable)
- Chartered Engineer Member - Engineers Australia (desirable)

- IP/MPLS
- Network Topologies
- VoIP
- Optical Transport Networks / DWDM / CWDM
- UHF
- Carrier GSM-R/LTE/RAN
- Microwave
- DAS – Distributed Antenna System
- RoIP – Radio over IP
- SDH/PDH
- Fibre Optics
- Proven work experience in network design
- Proven, extensive experience in fixed and/or wireless communications network field with experience in at least five or more of the following technologies
- Demonstrable experience in leading, developing, coaching and managing multi-disciplinary teams
- Extensive experience in commissioning telecommunication equipment in accordance with specifications and in compliance with relevant standards
- Knowledge and awareness of Australian Communications & Medica Authority (ACMA) and knowledge or awareness of the Telecommunications Act
- Commercial and practical experience in designing solutions
- Experience in Rail and Transport (desirable)
- Proven experience and understanding of quality management systems and processes.
