The Role
An APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer is accountable under broad direction to undertake complex work health and safety activities. They will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives. They will work with independence having the authority and discretion to investigate and gather information from diverse sources and explore new ideas and different viewpoints to support the longer-term business objectives.
An APS 5 Work Health and Safety Officer will apply initiative and experience to analyse, plan, review and adjust priorities. They will undertake objective, systematic analysis and draw accurate conclusions based on evidence along with detailed technical, operational, professional and procedural advice in relation to complex problems.
About our Team
As part of a small team, the WHS Officer is responsible to the SO2 Safety for the effective management of work health and safety to preserve human and material resources and enhance the wellbeing of AAvnTC members through continuous improvement in safety in accordance with Defence, Army and Aviation Command work health and safety policies and systems.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will be able to do the following:
- Accountable for research and analysis activities to identify and address work health and safety risks to capability.
- Develop and implement work health and safety systems and processes.
- Provide advice on the application of work health and safety legislation and Defence policies.
- Contribute to implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders on complex and sensitive work health and safety matters.
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders and subject matter experts to resolve work health and safety matters.
- Evaluate activities and processes for compliance with work health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.
- Resolve problems using professional expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action and implications for work health and safety activities.
- Conduct work health and safety incident investigations.
- Perform and facilitate work health and safety risk assessments.
- Coordinate and facilitate the work health and safety committee.
