State Council Governance Officer
Full-Time
$107,352.16 per annum inclusive of superannuation guarantee
We have an exciting and highly varied opportunity for a senior administration professional.
The State Council Governance Officer plays a pivotal role in supporting WALGA’s internal governance structure by providing high quality governance and administrative services to State Council and related Committees.
What is WALGA’s State Council?! It is the decision-making representative body of all Member Local Governments in WA and is responsible for sector-wide policy making and strategic planning. State Council consists of the Association President, and twenty-four members (State Councillors) from across WA, conducting five ordinary meetings per calendar year and housing ten policy teams and committees.
This is a role where precision meets purpose. Your ability to manage complex logistics, navigate sensitive political environments, and deliver seamless governance processes will directly contribute to WALGA’s success and strengthen our influence, advocacy, and support for the Local Government sector.
More than just an administrative position, this is an opportunity to directly support decision making for Local Government at a statewide level. You’ll provide high-quality governance and administrative services to ensure contemporary standards and obligations are upheld, and that reporting documentation and other deliverables are consistently met.
So, when we say this role will be highly varied, we mean it!
What could a typical week look like?
There may be some typical weeks, and others not typical at all.
One day could see you taking live minutes at the WALGA AGM, surrounded by over 600 council members and delegates from across WA, capturing decisions in real time in a high-pressure environment. The next, you might be coordinating a regional State Council meeting, arranging travel and accommodation for State Councillors, liaising with venues, and ensuring every detail is executed seamlessly.
You’ll prepare agendas, publish reports, update governance documentation, and provide timely advice all while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and discretion. You’ll also ensure State Councillors are always equipped with the right information, resources, and support to make informed decisions.
Let’s talk about you.
We’re looking for someone with exceptional written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated experience engaging with stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.
You’ll have the ability to build and maintain strong, professional working relationships, and a sharp eye for detail, paired with a passion for excellence.
If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, have high level administrative experience and take pride in delivering organised, high-quality support, this is your opportunity to play a key role in enabling effective governance for WALGA.
Why you’ll love working here
In addition to this everything we’ve mentioned, you’ll also get 6 weeks’ (30 days) annual leave and an extra day to celebrate your work anniversary every year.
We pride ourselves on offering a safe and inclusive culture with fantastic workplace benefits, entitlements and flexibility, including setting budget aside for professional development. What we are most proud of is getting the chance to work on niche projects, with some incredibly talented people, on issues that matter.
WALGA's HQ in West Leederville is centrally located within easy reach of public transport, bike paths and paid parking options. We also provide excellent end of trip facilities for those arriving by alternate methods of transport. Our Thrive wellbeing program means you’ll get to enjoy regular activities and initiatives (in fact we could be at a healthy mind seminar or a enjoying a fitness initiative whilst you’re reading this). We also have an active social club to cater for all interests and are committed to being a Menopause Friendly Australia employer.
