The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Director, Workplace Relations to provide a critical role within People, Safety, Culture and Communications.

About the Business Unit

Reporting to the Executive Director Employee and Workplace Relations, the Director Workplace Relations sits within the Employee and Workplace Relations team, People, Safety, Culture and Communications within the Department of Justice and Community Safety (department).

Employee and Workplace Relations is responsible for management of the Justice portfolio's industrial relations program, the management of departmental employee relations issues, the department's Human Resource Business Partnerships, employee investigations and also administers the internal review of actions process.

The Workplace Relations team is responsible for providing specialist consultancy services, advice and coaching around complex people management issues in relation to underperformance, discipline, conflict resolution, consultation processes, employee ill-health, organisational change and other employee relations issues.

About the Role

The Director Workplace Relations is responsible for providing authoritative, strategic leadership and management across Workplace Relations and driving the development of department-wide initiatives and service responses to enhance service delivery.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Drive the development and implementation of strategic and operational priorities for Workplace Relations that respond to emerging systemic issues or other drivers.
  • Lead complex negotiations with senior stakeholders, executives and union representatives to resolve sensitive and/or high-risk issues related to employment matters and the effective management of industrial risk and compliance.
  • Ensure EWR delivers robust support to the Secretary by overseeing the development, implementation and improvement of employment-related policies, procedures and projects.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Significant specialist experience in leading and managing a complex workplace relations or industrial relations function in a highly sensitive environment, preferably within a government workplace.
  • Exceptional track record of providing high level expertise on contemporary and innovative employee relations and industrial relations solutions, using complex technical information to inform high quality and timely advice to senior stakeholders.
  • An expert understanding of the legislative and industrial framework that applies to the Victorian Public Service, including the Public Administration Act 2004, the Fair Work Act 2009 and the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2024.

Qualifications/requirements

  • A tertiary qualification in employment law or a related field is highly desirable.
