About Us: EGS Survey Pty Ltd is a leading provider of hydrographic, geophysical, and geotechnical survey services across Australia and internationally. With a focus on technological innovation, we operate a fleet of inshore vessels and a dedicated DP1 offshore survey vessel, and have recently launched USV Fremantle 01—a 12 m purpose-built uncrewed vessel developed and deployed entirely in Western Australia.

Our Fremantle HQ houses our USV control centre, R&D workshop, and survey teams. We offer a collaborative and professional environment, including flexible work hours and proximity to Fremantle’s CBD, cafés, and beaches.

About the Role: As a USV Operator / Technician, you’ll be at the forefront of autonomous marine operations, supporting the readiness, maintenance, and deployment of our USV platform. The role is hands-on and diverse, with responsibilities across vessel preparation, remote operations support, and offshore mobilisation. Fieldwork is ad-hoc (~30–90 days/year) with the remainder based in Fremantle, supporting ongoing systems development and maintenance. We are seeking 2 x candidates at this stage.

This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a small, expert team shaping the future of survey operations in Australia.

Key Responsibilities

Fremantle-Based (Ongoing):

Conduct diagnostics, maintenance, and testing of onboard systems including propulsion, sensors, power, and comms.

Troubleshoot and configure electrical and control systems, including autonomy hardware.

Maintain technical documentation in line with AMSA and ISO standards.

Support continuous improvement of USV procedures and fleet infrastructure.

Participate in remote operations from the control centre as needed.

Field-Based (Ad-hoc) When on site, you will be part of a 2 person team responsible for:

Mobilise USV for deployment across Australia or internationally.

Completing weekly service and fueling

Driving the vessel to complete inshore /shallow water survey - can be few days to few weeks in a row.

Provide onsite support from the support vessel or port facility during operations.

Respond to onboard system issues and coordinate with remote operations team.

Assist with onsite equipment testing, data recovery, and system tuning.

Support training of crew or clients in basic operation and troubleshooting.

Qualifications and Experience

Technical experience in marine electronics, mechanics, or similar.

Minimum 3 years’ experience in marine systems or vessel-based operations.

Familiarity with integrated sensor systems (GNSS, sonar, comms, automation).

Desirable: Coxswain Grade 1 or 2 for limited vessel operation (training can be provided if you are a strong candidate with electrical or mechanical background)

Skills and Attributes

Practical, hands-on technician with strong diagnostic skills.

Technically confident in computers, electronics, and networked systems.

Comfortable working independently or embedded in offshore teams.

Strong communication and documentation skills.

Adaptable and enthusiastic about working with emerging technologies.
