We Are East Gippsland Shire

East Gippsland is an expansive natural playground, boasting over 21,000 square kilometers of high country, national parks, and breathtaking coastlines. As a major regional council, East Gippsland Shire covers 10% of Victoria and employs more passionate community members. We're committed to providing skills development and career growth opportunities while offering a lifestyle that balances work and leisure.

The Opportunity

As a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Education Officer you will champion a proactive safety culture across all our teams. This role focuses on delivering OHS training, supporting compliance, and guiding staff through safe work practices and systems. If you're passionate about workplace safety and skilled in education and engagement, this might be the perfect opportunity for you.

Key Responsibilities:

· Develop strong working relationships with staff, supervisors and managers to support and expand their knowledge of their OHS responsibilities through education and training.

· Deliver training for safe management systems (SMS), safe operating procedures (SOPs), Job task assessments (JTA's), Safe Working Methods Statements (SWMS) risk assessments and injury prevention models.

· Perform and document Verification of Competency (VOC) Assessments to support the business units in the provision of "suitable and adequate" training to protect persons from risks to their health and safety at work.

· Undertake site specific inductions for all staff.

· Facilitate Incident and Hazard system training and support for staff.

· Work collaboratively with the HSW Team to support adherence and achievement of the endorsed HSW strategic objectives.

· Assist in monitoring and reporting on OHS performance across the organisation, with particular emphasis on high-risk work environments and duties.

This is a full-time, limited tenure opportunity for 12 months. The WHS team works from our Lakes Entrance office, but you'll work from Lakes Entrance, Kalimna West and Bairnsdale regularly, with travel across the region as needed.

What we're looking for:

· Tertiary qualifications in OHS or related discipline and / or extensive and diverse experience.

· Demonstrated experience in applying a risk management approach to managing workplace health and safety.

· Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation, particularly in respect of OHS, and ability to prepare policy, guidelines and procedures.

· Demonstrated experience in delivery of OHS training.

· Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.

· High level organisational skills and the ability to manage projects from conception to implementation.

If successful, you'll need to undertake a police check and a pre-employment medical. You must also be legally entitled to work in Australia.
