This federal government division plays a vital role in shaping Australia’s energy future. Working at the forefront of energy performance and security, the team is focused on delivering practical solutions that reduce household and business energy costs while supporting Australia’s transition to Net Zero.

The division administers national legislation and programs that drive energy efficiency, support innovation, and promote the use of appliances and equipment that are cleaner and more efficient.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity to join a small, collaborative, and purpose-driven team that directly supports the effective operation of the GEMS program.

As an APS6 Program Support Officer, you’ll play an integral role in managing stakeholder enquiries and supporting the assessment and registration of energy-efficient products. The role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety and values accuracy, logical problem-solving, and meaningful public impact.

You’ll work closely with policy, technical, and regulatory teams, helping ensure Australia’s energy standards framework operates efficiently and transparently. With significant system updates underway, it’s a great time to join a program that’s modernising the way energy performance data is managed and communicated.

The Role

Reporting to the Assistant Director, you’ll:

  • Manage complex stakeholder enquiries received via the Energy Rating shared mailbox, providing clear, accurate, and well-reasoned written responses
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of the relevant legislation, determinations, and registration system to guide various external stakeholders
  • Conduct detailed assessments of product registrations during peak periods, applying sound judgement to ensure applications meet technical and legislative requirements
  • Maintain and update team knowledge libraries, standard operating procedures, and guidance materials
  • Collaborate across the branch to gather input on complex cases and contribute to continuous improvement of systems and processes

There is no customer service phone-based work involved – all correspondence is handled via email, allowing time to research, consult, and produce high-quality, well-referenced responses.

The Ideal Person

You’re a detail-minded professional who enjoys unpacking complexity and translating technical or legislative information into plain language. You take initiative, research answers independently, and are comfortable working within a framework of rules, standards, and procedures.

Your background might include roles in regulation, compliance, auditing, or policy administration. Or perhaps you’ve worked in an environment where assessing applications and interpreting guidelines was central to your role.

Key strengths we’re seeking include:

  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to clearly explain complex information
  • Excellent attention to detail, sound judgement, and methodical problem-solving skills
  • Experience working with ICT or registration systems and the ability to quickly learn new digital tools
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet agreed timeframes
  • A collaborative and respectful working style, with genuine interest in energy efficiency, sustainability, or public policy

Qualifications or experience in energy, sustainability, engineering, compliance, or public administration are an advantage but not essential.

This role requires the candidate to be an Australian citizen, eligible to obtain a Baseline Clearance or hold an active Baseline Clearance.

Salary / Rate

  • $65/hr - $75/hr + 12% Super
  • Hybrid working environment (typically 1–2 days in the Canberra office)
  • Inclusive and collaborative culture - supportive leadership and clear processes
  • 6-month Labour hire contract with strong likelihood of 9-month extension
