Are you an accomplished professional in Legal, Compliance, or AML/CTF?
Have you consistently delivered high performance in your roles?
Are you motivated to go the extra mile to generate value for your organisation?
Korea Development Bank (KDB), Korea’s policy bank, is establishing its Sydney Branch in the heart of the CBD to conduct wholesale banking operations in Australia. As one of the founding team members, you will play a critical role in setting up and stabilising the Branch. We are seeking an experienced Vice President (or Senior Vice President) – Compliance & Legal to lead and develop the Branch’s compliance function.
About the Role
In this role, you will work closely with and support the Chief Risk Officer (CRO). You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the Branch’s compliance framework, managing regulatory obligations with APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC, and OAIC, and serving as the Branch’s in-house legal counsel.
You will be expected to quickly familiarise yourself with the Branch’s policies and procedures, work autonomously, conduct research, and provide practical solutions to internal queries. An immediate priority will be drafting and implementing the Branch’s AML/CTF policies, drawing on KDB’s global standards and tailoring them to the Australian regulatory environment.
This is a dynamic role requiring adaptability, teamwork, and a strong commitment to professional growth. You will be encouraged to broaden your knowledge of the banking industry and to support the development of your team.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the CRO in implementing, enhancing, and embedding the Branch’s compliance
framework.
Provide independent and timely guidance on business activities, new initiatives,
regulatory developments, and interactions with regulators and counterparties.
Deliver timely, pragmatic, and commercially sound legal advice across a broad range of matters.
Establish and maintain compliance control registers and systems.
Develop and implement AML/CTF policies and procedures aligned to Australian regulations.
Monitor AML/CTF risks by reviewing alerts from transaction monitoring, sanctions, and watchlist screening systems.
Oversee and review KYC procedures.
Assess and interpret regulatory requirements (APRA, ASIC, AUSTRAC, OAIC) to
ensure compliance risks are identified, reported, and remediated.
Analyse processes and systems, recommending improvements to reduce compliance risk and support business operations.
Liaise with internal and external auditors on compliance-related matters.
Deliver face-to-face training and awareness sessions for business teams.
Respond to regulatory inquiries and Head Office requests.
Review transaction documentation, providing compliance and legal support, and
liaise with external counsel where required.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual compliance and AML/CTF reports for senior
management, committees, and Head Office.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues across functions.
Ensure accuracy and consistency in all deliverables, whether reports, advice, or communications.
Undertake ad hoc tasks as required.
What We’re Looking For
Tertiary qualifications in Law, Business, or a related discipline.
Admission as a lawyer in New South Wales.
Minimum 5 years’ post-admission experience in legal, compliance, or regulatory roles.
Bilingual proficiency in English and Korean (both written and verbal).
Strong skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Full, unrestricted working rights in Australia.
This role is ideal for a proactive, self-motivated professional who thrives in a start-up environment and embraces challenges with a “can-do” attitude. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build lasting relationships are essential.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview.
