Our business is a full cycle underwriting agency, including underwriting, claims, product, actuarial, finance and legal and compliance support for all our stakeholders. Our Insurance Products are distributed through licensed Insurance Brokers, distribution partners and direct to consumers in the Australian and New Zealand Market.

As our Senior Portfolio, Underwriting & Product Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our marine insurance portfolio. This is a senior leadership position responsible for driving underwriting excellence, product innovation, and portfolio performance. You will lead a high-performing team, collaborate with pricing, compliance, and analytics experts, and ensure our marine products remain competitive, compliant, and customer-focused.

Job Requirements

• Extensive marine insurance experience (7+ years), with deep technical knowledge in underwriting, product development, and portfolio management.
• Proven leadership experience (5+ years), including managing multiple teams and driving strategic initiatives across underwriting, pricing, and compliance.
• Strong commercial acumen, with a track record of delivering profitable growth and managing P&L responsibilities.
• Expertise in regulatory compliance, including ASIC and New Zealand equivalents, with a strong understanding of product design and distribution obligations.
• Advanced analytical and actuarial skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and influence pricing and product decisions.
• Tertiary qualifications in business, finance, law, actuarial science, or a related field. ANZIIF or equivalent professional certification is highly regarded.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence at all levels and represent NM Insurance in high-level forums.
• A strategic mindset, with the ability to lead change, drive innovation, and align underwriting and product strategies with broader business goals.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead the marine underwriting and product function, ensuring alignment with NM Insurance’s strategic objectives and insurer partner expectations.
• Oversee the development, enhancement, and governance of marine insurance products, ensuring competitiveness, compliance, and customer relevance.
• Drive portfolio performance, including monitoring GWP, loss ratios, and other key financial metrics, and implementing strategies to optimise results.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory and internal underwriting standards, including binder agreements and delegated authorities.
• Collaborate with pricing, actuarial, legal, and compliance teams to support robust product and underwriting decisions.
• Lead and develop high-performing teams, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer focus.
• Represent NM Insurance in Pricing & Underwriting Committees, insurer partner meetings, and strategic planning forums.
• Champion innovation and continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance underwriting processes, systems, and customer experience.
• Support education and capability uplift across the commercial team and broader business, including training, mentoring, and product knowledge sharing.
