About the role:

The Shift Supervisor (Afternoon Shift) is responsible for overseeing all production activities during the afternoon/evening shift at Gilbert Street Kitchens. This role ensures that ready meal production targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and to the company’s high standards of quality, presentation, and food safety. The supervisor leads the production team, coordinates resources, maintains workflow, and ensures compliance with company procedures, GMP, and food safety regulations.

Work Hours

PM Shift (typically 2:00pm – 10:00pm), Monday to Friday, with flexibility for production demands.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Shift Leadership & Team Management

Lead and motivate a team of production and packaging staff during the PM shift.

Conduct pre-shift briefings to communicate production goals, priorities, and any special requirements.

Provide guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training to all production team members.

Allocate tasks and monitor staff performance to ensure efficiency and adherence to standards.

Prepare and manage rosters to ensure adequate staffing levels and operational coverage.

Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive workplace culture.

Production & Workflow Coordination

Ensure the correct and accurate plate-up of ready meals at the required speed to meet production targets.

Supervise all production activities, including plating, packaging, and labelling.

Monitor workflow to maintain consistent output and minimise downtime or bottlenecks.

Ensure all production processes adhere to portion control, presentation, and packaging requirements.

Liaise with Kitchen, Logistics, and QA teams to ensure product components are available and quality-checked.

Set up, adjust, and operate production equipment efficiently for each product run, ensuring correct tool and setting changes.

Conduct minor onsite repairs and basic maintenance to machinery as required.

Operate and monitor date coders, labelling machines, and related production line equipment.

Monitor routine cleaning of equipment and production areas in line with procedure standards.

Quality, Food Safety & Compliance

Enforce GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), HACCP, and company food safety standards.

Complete and maintain GMP records accurately and on time.

Conduct in-process quality checks (temperature, portion accuracy, packaging integrity, label verification).

Health, Safety & Environment

Ensure safe work practices are followed by all team members.

Identify and report hazards, incidents, or unsafe behaviours.

Promote a proactive safety culture and compliance with WHS policies and procedures.

Ensure all machinery and tools are used safely and maintained in good condition.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Achievement of daily production targets (accuracy, speed, and timeliness).

Compliance with GMP, HACCP, and food safety requirements.

Minimise waste, rework, and downtime.

Team engagement, performance, and attendance.

Positive audit outcomes and zero major non-conformances.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

Minimum 2 years’ experience in food manufacturing, hospitality, or ready-meals production.

Proven experience leading a small to medium team in a production or high-care environment.

Strong understanding of food safety, GMP, and HACCP requirements.

Hands-on experience with production machinery, including date coders and labelling systems.

Ability to perform basic mechanical adjustments, tool changes, and minor equipment repairs.

Excellent communication, organisation, and time management skills.

Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities under pressure.
