Salary: $73,000 – $84,000 (pro rata 0.8 FTE) + superannuation + benefits

Magabala Books is Australia’s leading First Nations publishing house.
Proudly Aboriginal led, Magabala is an internationally-recognised and award-winning publisher based on Yawuru and Djugan Country in Rubibi (Broome) that has been celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories since 1987.
Currently we publish 18 new titles a year, including children’s picture books, junior and young adult fiction, adult fiction, memoir, non-fiction and poetry. More than a publishing house, our unique cultural, developmental and advisory role sets us apart.
About the Role
We’re looking for a motivated Project Officer to join our growing team in Broome. This role supports the delivery of Magabala’s creative and cultural development programs, special projects, and community partnerships.
Working closely with the Programs and Impact Manager, you’ll provide project coordination and administration support across key initiatives including:
First Stories Collective and Intergenerational Storytelling Project
Creative Development Scholarships, Fellowships and Grants
Daisy Utemorrah Award and Kestin Indigenous Illustrator Award
Fundraising campaigns, community events, and partnerships
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to projects that celebrate and strengthen First Nations storytelling in Australia. It’s a varied, purpose-driven role suited to someone who values cultural integrity, creativity, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
Support planning and delivery of Magabala’s programs and awards.
Assist with community engagement, events, and partnership coordination.
Contribute to fundraising and grant applications.
Prepare reports, acquittals, and evaluation materials.
Provide general administration and secretariat support as needed.
What We’re Looking For
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a small team.
Passion for supporting and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling.
Willingness to live and work in Rubibi (Broome).
