The Department is seeking to establish a talent pool to fill both immediate and future vacancies for Environmental Officers (Specified Calling Levels 1 and 2).

We currently have two (2) permanent vacancies to fill immediately within our Heavy Industries branch and other permanent positions arising in the near future. We also have fixed term contracts available now which may be extended or made permanent.

Whether you are a recent graduate or come from a career in mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, primary production, waste management, environmental consulting or government, your skills and knowledge can transfer into a rewarding role as an Environmental Officer in our Environmental Regulation division. We are seeking individuals who would embrace the opportunity to be part of a motivated team within one of our branches responsible for regulation of industrial emissions and discharges from prescribed premises under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 through a works approval and licensing process.

Heavy Industries - This newly established branch leads the regulation of major manufacturing, energy, refining, bulk material loading and other industry projects having State Significant project status or otherwise a priority, significant or technically complex project. As part of a team dedicated to excellence in environmental regulation, you will play a key role in one of DWER’s most dynamic and high-impact areas, helping to shape sustainable outcomes for some of the State’s most significant development projects.

Process Industries – The Process Industries branch regulates a diverse array of industrial premises including mineral processing, manufacturing, energy production, chemical processing, oil and gas, agribusiness, breweries and wineries. Within this team you will have exposure to a variety of industries, will support the wider regulatory responsibilities of DWER and contribute to industry guidance, strategic projects and reform initiatives.

Resource Industries – The Resource Industries branch oversees the regulation of the State’s raw material processing and mining operations, including mineral sands extraction and associated activities such as wastewater treatment, power generation, and waste management. As a member of the team you have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders across industry, government and the community.

Waste Industries - The Waste Industries Branch regulates landfills, liquid waste facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and waste storage and transfer stations across the State. As part of the team you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to advancing circular economy policies and programs, collaborate closely with the Waste Assurance Branch, and engage with a wide range of external stakeholders.

Environmental Officer – Licensing – Specified Calling Level 1

As an Environmental Officer Licensing (SCL1), you’ll be part of a team that plays a critical role in protecting Western Australia’s environment through the assessment of applications for works approvals and licences under the Environmental Protection Act 1986. This entry-level opportunity offers a strong foundation for early-career professionals to develop environmental assessment and regulatory expertise within a collaborative and forward-thinking team. In this role you will have the opportunity to apply your scientific expertise and analytical skills to real-world environmental challenges. Your interpersonal skills and commitment to teamwork will be key to thriving in a workplace that values inclusion, curiosity, and collective leadership.

Environmental Officer – Licensing – Specified Calling Level 2

The Environmental Officer Licensing (SCL2) role is designed for professionals ready to apply their scientific and regulatory expertise and experience to assess works approval and licence applications, contribute to strategic policy development, and provide high-level advice relating to Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. The capacity to manage shifting priorities within a dynamic regulatory environment is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively and engage with a diverse range of stakeholders. This position offers a distinctive opportunity to contribute meaningfully to environmental protection while advancing your career within a department that values innovation, integrity, and collective leadership.

As a department we recognise that flexible working arrangements support effective work-life balance, empowers our people and increases team productivity. We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. We value the unique diversity of experience that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and youth bring to our workforce.

Our strength is the diversity of our people and their experience so for further information about the opportunity, or to discuss how your experience and knowledge can transfer into a role as an Environmental Officer here at DWER, we encourage you to contact Amine Fisher.
