Be part of the exciting tropical plant industries of the Northern Territory and participate in the Research, Development and Extension team.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) was formed in August 2024 to enable agricultural producers to grow their business and the industry. The department underpins the Territory’s reputation as a supplier of safe and quality agricultural produce through scientific research, strong biosecurity practices and compliance with animal welfare legislation.

Situated within DAF, the Plant Industries work unit provides regional engagement and support services for developing broadacre cropping opportunities in the Northern Territory and incorporates the Research and Development Team.

As a Senior Technical Officer, you will provide high-level support to the senior staff in the design, implementation and management of field trials or experiments. This involves conducting research trials, demonstration sites and extension projects through sustainable management practices on a range of cropping industries.

Your key duties include collecting research data, providing technical advice and operating and maintaining field equipment and farm machinery. You will also work with participating communities to establish demonstration sites of crops, collect and undertake research, and attend community events and consultations.

To be successful you require an approved Diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture Science or equivalent with relevant work experience.

Extensive knowledge of experimental procedures and application of scientific rigour to research in a range of plant industries, ability to conduct on-groundwork and operate specialised equipment and machinery in an operational farm setting is essential.

Based at the Katherine Research Station you will undertake regular travel by road to rural communities and will require a current driver’s licence to drive a manual vehicle.

In return, you will receive a competitive salary, 12% superannuation, six weeks’ recreation and three weeks’ personal leave, an additional 3 days paid leave over the Christmas shutdown and up to 17.5% annual leave loading.
