The Opportunity

On 1 February 2025, a new era for racing in Tasmania began when the newly established Tasracing Integrity Unit (TIU) assumed responsibility for Racing Integrity across the State. An exciting opportunity is now available for an experienced Animal Welfare Officer to join the TIU’s Investigations & Animal Welfare Unit.

The Animal Welfare Officer will conduct stable and kennel inspections across the State and be responsible for ensuring industry participants are compliant with the Rules of Racing and Industry Codes of Practice; as well as providing education and information regarding best practice. This position may need to perform duties outside of usual business hours when required.

Key Responsibilities

Planning and conducting stable and kennels inspections, ensuring premises of all licensed trainers are inspected bi-annually

Identifying breaches of Codes of Practice, facilitating compliance, and conducting follow up visits; escalating when required

Identifying breaches of the Rules of Racing, escalating appropriately, assisting with inquiries and compilation of Briefs of Evidence

Close collaboration with Investigators and Stipendiary Stewards

Providing/co-ordinating response to animal welfare complaints

Ensuring all reporting and data management requirements are completed

Benchmarking performance, monitoring outcomes, and recommending improvements for identified animal welfare issues

Supporting veterinarians in developing and reviewing policies and procedures to promote animal health and welfare

About You

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

Passion for racing industry and animal welfare

Experience/knowledge of animal welfare strategies and programs

Knowledge and experience in investigative techniques and procedures, and the application of laws, Acts or law enforcement, is desirable

Knowledge of prohibited substances and analytical procedures would be highly desirable

Proven ability to manage confidential information with integrity, professionalism, and fairness

Ability to follow strict procedural guidelines

Strong attention to detail, excellent time management, and the ability to meet deadlines

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, partnered with being proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite

A genuine commitment to protecting the integrity of the racing industry

Ability to perform duties outside of usual business hours if required.
