Animal Management Compliance Officer

Requisition Number: 811

Salary Range: $73,207.22 - $78,220.08 per annum

Position Type: Full Time Permanent

Location: Council Chambers, 119 – 145 Spence Street, Cairns

Application Close Date: Sunday, 21 September 2025 at 11.30pm AEST

Make a real difference in the Cairns community – protect people, promote responsible pet ownership, and ensure the wellbeing of animals.

We have an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and community-focused individual to join our team!

What You Will Do:

As an Animal Management Compliance Officer, you will be the front line of ensuring community safety and animal welfare across the Cairns region. This is a dynamic and engaging role where no two days are the same, one moment you may be educating pet owners on responsible pet ownership, the next you could be investigating a serious dog attack or reuniting a lost pet with its family.

You will carry out proactive patrols, enforce Council’s Local Laws and the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008, investigate complaints, and support the community through education and awareness programs. Whether it is dealing with barking complaints, off-leash dogs, or livestock on roads, you will be working to create a safer, more harmonious environment for both people and animals.

What We Are Looking For:

Current “C” class driver’s licence and the ability to independently drive between all business locations to meet operational needs.

Experience with powers of entry execution under an authorised persons appointment.

Knowledge of or ability to interpret and understand Council’s Local Laws and the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008 and other legislation specific to Animal Management.

High level written and oral communication skills including the ability to draft routine correspondence and reports.

Ability to capture and handle animals, in particular dogs, cats and livestock.

Ability to understand and assess dangerous animal behaviour.

Demonstrated ability to negotiate and problem solve with a desire to find solutions in the best interests of the community.

Ability to relate in a courteous and diplomatic manner, particularly in dispute situations.

Some benefits we offer:

Achieve work / life balance with flexible working arrangements

Fitness Passport - subsidised health and well-being memberships (gym/swimming pool)

Recharge with up to 5 weeks annual leave

Up to 3 weeks personal leave

Cherish family time with up to 14 weeks paid parental leave

Grow personally and professionally with learning and development opportunities

Salary sacrifice opportunities

We are committed to:

Fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment

Embracing innovation and continuous improvement

Cultivating a culture of professional growth and support

Now we want to hear about YOU!

Applications MUST be submitted online through the 'Apply' button and include a Cover Letter addressing the selection criteria and Resume outlining previous academic and work experience and if requested include attachments of the relevant qualifications and licenses, relating to the role.
