Your opportunity
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Housing Officer to support families and individuals in achieving their goals within a safe and secure environment. This role plays a vital part in helping tenants access education, employment, and long-term stable housing while fostering independence and wellbeing.
The Housing Officer works closely with tenants, providing tailored, culturally appropriate support and guidance, building strong relationships, and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver meaningful outcomes for our program participants.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Conduct holistic assessments and develop person- or family-centred plans to support tenants in achieving goals related to housing, education, and employment.
- Provide guidance and education on tenancy rights, housing responsibilities, and related issues, including family domestic violence, mental health, and substance use.
- Assist tenants in transitioning to long-term stable housing and connecting with appropriate support services.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with service providers, community partners, and other stakeholders to enhance tenant outcomes.
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with Mission Australia policies, procedures, statutory requirements, and contractual obligations.
- Manage tenancy records, rent arrears, property maintenance, and case management data using Mission Australia systems.
- Collaborate with colleagues, participate in multi-agency case meetings, and engage in continuous professional development.
Requirements for success
- Relevant degree with at least one year of experience, an Associate Diploma with relevant experience, or a less formal qualification with substantial relevant experience.
- Minimum of 12 months' experience working with a diverse range of tenants, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with knowledge of Aboriginal cultural systems and protocols.
- Strong understanding of issues related to housing instability and homelessness.
- Knowledge of resources, organisations, and agencies that support people experiencing barriers to stable housing.
- Experience working with people facing challenges such as family and domestic violence, mental and physical health issues, substance use, and social or cultural obligations.
- Well-developed oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to use Mission Australia's web-based information management systems.
- Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Effective time management skills, with the ability to exercise judgment and manage multiple tasks.
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
