ROLE
Our client is seeking an APS6 Chemical Risk Assessor to join a multi-disciplinary team of scientists on an initial 12-month non-ongoing contract, with the possibility of a further 6-month extension. This role is based in the Chemical Assessments Section, which plays a vital role in protecting the environment from the risks of harmful chemicals, synthetic greenhouse gases, and ozone-depleting substances.
Successful candidates will have a strong chemistry background.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct and contribute to environmental risk assessments of industrial chemicals.
Deliver clear, influential technical advice in line with legislation and best practice.
Collaborate across teams and with stakeholders nationally and internationally.
Develop new tools, guidance, and processes to improve chemical assessment capabilities.
Stay up to date with regulatory frameworks and emerging scientific developments.
Work Environment:
Flexible working arrangements supported, including fully remote work (40% of staff are remote).
Location: Canberra preferred, but remote work will be supported for suitable candidates.

Contract and Permanency:
This is a non-ongoing role with no guarantee of extension or permanency. However, high performers often find opportunities in other public sector teams.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Successful candidates will meet the following criteria:
Australian Citizen – for clearance purposes
A good level of education such as MSc or a PhD in Chemistry, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, or Environmental Modelling of Chemicals.
Metals, inorganic, or organometallic chemistry experience (highly desirable)
Experience in regulatory assessment of chemicals and/or risk management frameworks (highly desirable).
Strong technical skills in interpreting and evaluating complex scientific data.
Clear and persuasive communication skills — both written and verbal.
The ability to work collaboratively, think strategically, and deliver high-quality results under limited direction.
