About the role:

The primary focus of the position is to support the Finance Manager in performing the day-to-day financial operations in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.

The Accountant is supervised by the Finance Manager and the position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This position works closely with other members of the Finance Team and maintains regular contact with other program staff to ensure policies and processes are adhered to in relation to all finance functions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the Finance Manager with accounting functions, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, and the preparation of supporting workpapers for financial reporting, grant acquittals, and both internal and external audits.
  • Independently manage the organisation’s fixed asset register and portable and attractive register, including the acquisition, disposal, stocktake and revaluation of assets.
  • Analyse financial data and budgetary performance of the organisation and communicate outcomes with relevant stakeholders to support the organisation’s goals and objectives.
  • Lead and contribute to project-based work, ensuring timely achievement of project milestones while identifying opportunities for process improvements and implementing strategies to enhance organisational effectiveness.
  • Coordinate and support procurement activities, including preparing and evaluating tenders, maintaining compliance with procurement policies, and fostering relationships with suppliers to achieve value for money and organisational objectives.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training for financial concepts, systems and processes across the organisation.
  • Provide guidance, support and relief for the finance team to ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions including end to end creditor and payroll processing as required.
  • Ensure all corporate information is captured within the organisations business systems adhering to record keeping policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement processes and participate in quality assurance activities to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

Core Capabilities:

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

Assessment of merit for this role will be based on the knowledge, skills and experience, potential for development and personal qualities. The competencies listed below are considered to the most critical for success in this role.

1. Demonstrated experience with complex accounting software including project costing ledgers, together with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products at an advanced level, with a specific emphasis on MS Excel.

2. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

3. Tertiary qualifications in Accounting and demonstrated experience preparing detailed work papers with a high level of accuracy.

4. Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.

6. Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

  • CA/CPA (or equivalent) including current membership of relevant professional body or working towards.
  • Hold a current Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
  • Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Possess a current driver’s licence.
  • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen’s policies and procedures.
