Our client is a newly incorporated, Sydney-based start-up company with a bold vision to revolutionise commercial construction through prefabricated, integrated service modules. With strong capital backing and experienced industry investors, they are targeting rapid expansion across the Asia-Pacific region – and they’re looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to help shape the engineering function from the ground up.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, this critical role will lead all facets of mechanical design and engineering – from hands-on 3D modelling to managing design operations and driving innovation. You’ll work across internal and external engineering teams to deliver scalable, cost-effective, and certifiable design-for-manufacture-and-install (DfMI) solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage end-to-end mechanical design and development activities.
  
• Drive 3D CAD modelling and generate manufacturing documentation.
  
• Implement and oversee the company’s Product Data Management (PDM) system.
  
• Establish engineering standards, procedures, and validation protocols.
  
• Provide technical direction to internal and external design resources.
  
• Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Manufacturing to optimise product design, quality, and cost.
  
• Ensure compliance with relevant standards (AS/NZS9001, AS/NZS14001, etc.)
  
• Oversee structural and performance analysis, including certification processes.
  
• Contribute hands-on to supplement team output when needed.
  

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering.
  
• 5+ years’ experience in engineering design leadership, ideally in manufacturing or construction.
  
• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks/Inventor or Revit; strong PDM experience.
  
• Expertise in sheet metal fabrication and product development for manufacture.
  
• Understanding of mechanical/electrical infrastructure in commercial buildings.
  
• Strong communication and business acumen with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  
• Proven leadership and a hands-on, problem-solving mindset.
