This independent government agency manages one of Australia’s most important natural resources, balancing environmental, economic, and social needs.
Their work supports millions of Australians, including local communities, industries, and First Nations people, while addressing climate change challenges to ensure sustainable management for future generations.
Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, the agency plays a vital role in protecting this essential resource.
The Opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a payroll coordination role where your work supports a nationally significant mission.
As Payroll Officer, you’ll take the lead in managing payroll services and employee entitlements with precision and care. You’ll be the central contact for all things payroll, ensuring staff receive accurate advice and pay outcomes, while supporting end-to-end processes and continuous improvement.
Working within a professional and collaborative People & Culture team, you’ll have the chance to broaden your APS experience, contribute to meaningful reform, and strengthen your technical capability in a role that blends autonomy with team support. If you’re motivated, proactive, and ready for a fresh challenge, this could be the ideal next step in your public service career.
The Role
As the payroll officer, you coordinate the delivery of efficient, accurate and compliant payroll services, including but not limited to:
- Manage payroll operations including commencements, terminations, movements, adjustments and superannuation
- Provide timely and accurate advice to staff on pay, conditions and leave entitlements
- Act as the primary contact for internal payroll queries and system support
- Liaise with the external shared services provider to ensure seamless payroll delivery
- Assist with payroll reporting, audits, EOFY processes, and compliance
- Contribute to policy and process improvements to support business outcomes
The Ideal Person
You’re a highly organised payroll professional with experience in public service payroll. You’re confident managing payroll functions independently and are comfortable providing clear, accurate advice to staff and stakeholders. You pride yourself on your attention to detail, time management, and ability to stay composed under pressure.
With a collaborative mindset and strong communication skills, you build great working relationships and bring a proactive approach to problem-solving. You’re also comfortable using payroll and HR systems, and you’re eager to keep building your knowledge in a dynamic and purpose-led environment.
If you're looking for a stable, meaningful role in a values-driven agency, this opportunity offers the perfect mix of impact, growth, and job satisfaction.
