About the role

We are seeking a dynamic Coordinator Planning Approvals to lead our Planning Approvals team in delivering responsive, customer-focused statutory planning services. Reporting to the Manager Urban Planning and Development, you will oversee the assessment of complex development applications, provide expert advice to stakeholders, and mentor a team of Senior Urban Planners, Urban Planners, and Student Planners. This role is ideal for a proactive leader with deep knowledge of Western Australia’s planning framework and a passion for delivering high-quality outcomes that align with the City’s strategic vision.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the assessment of development, subdivision, DAP, SAT, and compliance matters, ensuring alignment with legislation and City policies.
  • Lead and manage the Planning Approvals team, ensuring effective work allocation and timely delivery of statutory planning services.
  • Provide expert advice to staff, Council, and external stakeholders in a solution-focused manner.
  • Represent the City in external forums including SAT and court proceedings.
  • Support staff development through mentoring, performance reviews, and training planning.
  • Drive continuous improvement in planning processes and contribute to strategic planning initiatives.

About the successful candidate

To thrive in this role, you will bring extensive experience in statutory planning, strong leadership capabilities, and a collaborative mindset. You will be confident in managing complex applications and engaging with diverse stakeholders to achieve positive planning outcomes. Other requirements are:

  • A degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline and eligibility for full membership with the Planning Institute of Australia.
  • Minimum six years’ experience in urban and regional planning, including leadership roles.
  • Strong knowledge of WA’s Statutory Planning Framework and relevant legislation.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven experience in presenting to Council, DAP, and attending SAT or court matters.
  • Current ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence and National Police Certificate.

What we offer

This permanent, full-time position offers a cash salary of $115,291 - $133,968 per annum, dependent on skills and experience, plus superannuation. You will also enjoy:

The City of Nedlands is situated just 7km from Perth and stretches from the banks of the beautiful Swan River to the edge of the Indian Ocean. A population of over 21,000 live in the suburbs Nedlands, Dalkeith, Mt Claremont, Swanbourne, Karrakatta, and parts of Floreat and Shenton Park. On 1 July, 1959 the City of Nedlands was proclaimed at the command of Governor Sir Charles Gairdner, in the packed Dalkeith Civic Hall. Mr Allan Jenkins read out the proclamation and the Minister for Local Government, Mr Leslie Logan, M.L.C. conducted the official swearing in ceremony of the new Mayor, John Charles Smith, the twelve new Councillors and the auditors. He then appointed Mr Allan Jenkins as the City's first Town Clerk. Among those present was MLA for Nedlands, Deputy Premier Charles Court.

Significant events and dates that contributed to the development of the City of Nedlands:

1893: The first move to establish Local Government in our area with the creation of the Claremont Road Board on 31 March, 1893, governing a total area of ten square miles; forty years after the death of Adam Armstrong, Nedlands' first resident.

1898: Approximately two square miles excised to form the Municipality of Claremont.

1932: Name changed from Claremont Road Board to Nedlands Road Board.

1956: Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the Municipality of Nedlands.

1959: One hundred and thirty years after the first British settlement around the Swan River, Nedlands achieved City status. Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the City of Nedlands while under the guidance of Mayor John Charles Smith Esq., JP Mayor.
