Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) is seeking a skilled and committed Vessel Master & Marine Operations Coordinator to lead marine patrols and back-to-Country trips along the spectacular Kimberley coastline. This is a unique opportunity to work on Country, support Indigenous Ranger development, and contribute to the protection of one of Australia’s most remote and culturally significant marine environments.
This Role is based in Derby, WA, relocation support is provided to the successful candidate.
About the Dambeemangaddee People:
We are the Traditional Owners of the land and waters along the north-west Kimberley coastline, extending from the Robinson River, just north of Derby to the Prince Regent River in the far north of the Kimberley region in WA. It has been our home for many thousands of years. We carry the cultural responsibilities of our ancestors to look after Country. Our Country is of great conservation significance, home to many threatened and endemic species, mighty rivers, coral reefs, powerful whirlpools, rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and more than 700 islands. Dambeemangaddee are part of the Wandjina Woongudd community. We all share a unique body of beliefs and cultural practices we maintain strong connections to our land through our Law, Culture, songs and stories. We visit our Country when we can and have set up homeland communities on our remote coastline. We want to return to Country, live on our homelands, regain control, and teach future generations.
About the Corporation:
Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) is a small, community-driven organisation based in one of the most remote and spectacular regions of the Kimberley. We represent and work for the Dambimangari Traditional Owners, guided by Law and Culture. With a team of over 30, most of whom are Traditional Owners, DAC delivers a wide range of programs and services that support our people, protect Country, and strengthen culture. Our key functions include:
- Managing Native Titles and stakeholder engagement (mining, tourism, development)
- Members Services in health, education and wellbeing
- Land and sea management, including ranger programs and marine parks
- Cultural heritage and visitor management
- Economic development and Remote infrastructure
- Corporate Services (finance, admin, payroll)
About the Role:
As DAC’s Vessel Master & Marine Operations Coordinator, you’ll provide expert leadership in remote marine operations, ensuring safe, compliant, and culturally respectful sea country patrols and back-to-Country trip. Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and coordinate marine patrols and back-to-Country trips in remote Kimberley locations.
- Ensure vessel safety, compliance, and maintenance.
- Mentor and support Indigenous Rangers through accredited coxswains training and on-the-job development.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and contribute to fee-for-service and conservation projects.
- Manage logistics, administration, and reporting for marine operations.
About You:
You’re a skilled marine operations professional with a strong sense of cultural respect and a passion for working on Country. You bring:
- At least 5 years’ experience in marine operations, including vessel handling, remote logistics, and skippering vessels such as the 10m GM Air Rider
- Proven ability to lead and mentor teams in remote marine environments
- Practical experience maintaining and servicing vessels, trailers, and marine equipment
- Strong understanding of vessel safety management systems, maritime compliance, and operational procedures
- Confidence operating in remote areas on extended expeditions with basic camping conditions
- Experience working with Aboriginal communities, particularly in the Kimberley, is highly regarded
- Excellent leadership, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Proficiency in planning, logistics, and administration related to marine operations
- Skilled in training delivery and capacity building
- Competence in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools
Qualification & Requirements:
- Minimum Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal), with an ability to obtain Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 meters Near Coastal) “Master 5’’
- An ability to obtain and maintain a Working with Children Check and National Police Clearance
