About the Role
The City is seeking an experienced Community Historian, with a passion for local history, who enjoys building relationships and interacting with a broad cross section of internal and external stakeholders. These include, but are not limited to, community groups and members, media organisations, museum and heritage professionals, educational and cultural institutions, government agencies, Elected Members, and internal City business units.
The position works under the guidance of the Coordinator Cultural Services and is responsible for the development and management of the Community History component of the City’s Museum Collection, including acquisition, cataloguing, conservation, housing and preservation of printed, digital and archival resources.
The role provides advice and information about the City’s history in a variety of formats to internal and external stakeholders, with a focus on the preservation of the City’s cultural heritage. The role also delivers a variety of community history services and programs, such as research and retrieval, the ongoing development of digital resources, oral history collection, image sales, and conducts community tours and presentations.

As a collaborative member of the Cultural Services team, you will be an adaptable, experienced heritage professional. Our ideal candidate will enjoy working with a broad cross section of people, be able to work autonomously and as part of a team. You must also thrive working in a very busy and change driven organisation. As such, you will be able to demonstrate through your resume and covering letter that you meet the following capabilities:
- Advanced research and analysis skills.
- Advanced experience in the use of collection management systems
- Experience managing an archival or Community History collection.
- Experience supervising and managing volunteers.
- Advanced communication and problem solving skills.
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline such as Library and Information Services, History or Museum Studies or related discipline.
