The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking 5 x Industry Officer's to provide a critical role at Western Plains Correctional Centre
About the Business Unit
Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of Corrections Victoria and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities.
The Vocational Services Team consists of three key portfolios - industries, education and programs. The role of the team is to prepare people in our care for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities through employment, integrated job training, targeted educational opportunities, personal development programs and activities.
The Industry portfolio includes oversight of Food service, Laundry, Grounds / environmental service, Metal, Paint, Warehouse, Canteen and Snap frozen production The overall objective is to provide training and employment opportunities to the men in our care and to meet the commercial and service industry production goals and service requirements.
About the Role
The Industry Officer plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to industry processes, offender management and security management.
Some of your duties will include:
- Oversee efficient and effective operational aims of the industries are achieved. These include commercial production targets and customer expectations, ordering and maintaining control of stock, materials, financial records and providing an industry model-workplace training environment.
- Effectively manage all work areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors. This includes appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff and prisoners for Compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety, and security procedures.
- Deliver performance management targets and undertake professional development as required to enhance the role as part of a staff team, with emphasis on following industry requirements for OH&S, quality assurance, monitoring, recording and record keeping systems of prison industry functional areas and recommending improvements where necessary.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Relevant trade experience in food industry/catering would be advantageous
- Completion of appropriate trade qualifications or equivalent related to the needs of the facility and experience at training workers in that trade area.
Qualifications/requirements
- Whilst no formal qualifications are required for this role, trade qualifications or knowledge and skills within commercial kitchen, Horticulture, Metal, Paint applications, Warehouse and Snap frozen operations is desirable
- Completion of (or willing to undertake) Corrections Victoria pre-service training
- Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) is desirable.
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is desirable.
