Assistant Project Manager – Mechanical Engineer

Cablex Pty Ltd is Australia's leading globally recognised AS9100 manufacturer and exporter of Defence and Aerospace products to Australia, Germany, France and USA including complex wiring harnesses, electromechanical assemblies, avionic bays, consoles and box build electrical enclosures. Cablex has significant experience in developing and building electrical systems for harsh environments and developing solutions where electrical shielding is a critical factor.

Our work is largely project driven with a continued growth in customer orders. We are looking for an experienced Assistant Project Manager - Mechanical Engineer, to join our operations team in Clayton South, Melbourne.

The Role:

Reporting directly to an experienced Project Manager, the Assistant Project Manager – Mechanical Engineer will support the management and execution of one or more projects in the complex Electrical Wiring Interconnect Systems (EWIS), Electro-Mechanical Assemblies, Avionic Bays, Consoles and box Build Electrical Enclosures for the Defence, Aerospace & Rail market.

To effectively assist in the delivery of project tasks related to planning, manufacturing, and delivery of customer orders and customer relationship management. The Assistant PM will support to ensure tasks are satisfactorily completed in an efficient and effective manner in line with company objectives. The PM function includes inputs to the SOP process, new project/Product deliverables, production, safety, program costing/budgeting, and DIFOT.

Key responsibilities:

Organising programs and activities in accordance with the agreed terms of the contracts and in alignment with the mission and goals of the organisation.

Customer relationship management.

Negotiating the expansion of current customer contracts and enhancing the quality of existing programs.

Developing a budget (with Finance), and operating plan for the program.

Managing short and long-term goals for the assigned products including project completion plans.

Managing budgets and liaising with Finance on all financial aspects of the program.

Develop a robust risk mitigation plan to guarantee uninterrupted delivery of products/services. Ongoing evaluation of program risks and identifying areas for improvement.

Managing a team with a diverse array of talents and responsibilities.

Ensuring company goals are met in areas including customer satisfaction, safety, quality, and team member performance.

Implementing and managing changes and interventions to ensure overall project goals are achieved.

Meeting with stakeholders to make communication easy and transparent regarding project issues and decisions on products/services.

Producing accurate and timely reporting of program status throughout its life cycle.

Working with HR and the Production Manager to ensure staff resources and training are assigned to programs in a timely manner.

Liaising with the Business Development team to optimize sales opportunities with the assigned customers.

Key decision-maker and facilitator in the bid process including design, submission, and review

Reporting on program performance to GM Operations.

Identifying opportunities for continual improvement.

Ensuring relevant standards, processes, and regulations are upheld by the Program Team

Supporting internal and external audits

Follow the company's OHS policies, processes and procedures.

Skills required:

Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field is mandatory (Australian Quality Training Framework – Level 7 or equivalent)

Tertiary qualifications in Engineering discipline – Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics or equivalent

Minimum 1 year of defence vehicle harness production experience.

Experience in the delivery of complex projects will be highly regarded

Experience using MRP systems for a variety of tasks.

Experience working in plant maintenance is an advantage.

Strong attention to detail.

Strong mechanical knowledge.

Must possess excellent communication skills & trouble-shooting skills.

Proven history of understanding industry safety standards and quality expectations.

Strong understanding of electrical harnesses/enclosures within the manufacturing industry

Must be able to solve problems quickly and effectively.

Excellent planning, analysis, and evaluation skills

Strong knowledge of quality systems and procedures

Financial skills necessary to support the development of budgets and business cases.

Project planning skills to ensure defined strategic and contract outcomes are achieved.

Experience in Engineering or Manufacturing / Production scheduling function and project Management.

Strong product knowledge gained through experience in the electronics/manufacturing/assembly environment.

Understanding of PLM (product life cycle management), and customer relationship management.
