Peace of Mind Foundation (POMF) is Australia’s leading brain cancer support charity and is responsible for the appointment, oversight and management of the position. The position is a joint collaboration between POMF foundation who manage the NAS program and key stakeholders who provide financial funding and partnership support for the position.
Position Context
We know that those dealing with the devastating impact of a brain cancer diagnosis are not accessing the available funding support through NDIS/Centrelink/Health that they should be for a variety of reasons. The processes involved in accessing funding are not easy, in fact can be frustratingly complex for individuals already overwhelmed with the all-encompassing treatment regime they have been thrust into.
Peace of Mind Foundation (POMF) has created a centralised, informed, sustainable and recognised national brain cancer advocacy service, that focuses on assisting individuals and families access the funding support they need and to be linked up to appropriate support services and programs.
Position Purpose
The purpose of the position is to provide people-centered, responsive, and timely advice and support that includes:
Assessing the care needs of people living with brain cancer
Planning to address current and future care needs
Making appropriate referrals
Acting as an interface with health professionals and service providers
Remaining as an ongoing point of contact, for future needs
The main activities of the role include.
Provide guidance and support to POMF clients in accessing government services including NDIS, Centrelink and My Aged Care.
Support initial review processes for rejection of claims for government services support.
Formally advocate on behalf of brain cancer clients on survivorship issues and identify any other Not for Profit support available to clients.
Support the National Advocacy Manager in supervising a team of Volunteers and their training to undertake the face-to-face engagement of individuals, families and carers in the processes of accessing government support services.
Have a developed and in-depth understanding of the government policies, processes, and procedures of support services and in particular the NDIS.
Participate as a POMF staff member supporting the CEO, Board and other staff.
The advocate is partly responsible for the supervision and training of a team of volunteer staff who will help undertake the client contact work and assist individuals, families and carers navigate the processes involved in accessing Government program support.
Key Selection Criteria:
Essential
Qualifications and experience commensurate with the requirements to successfully support the development of this program, and the clients referred.
Highly developed interpersonal skills, an ability to multi-task and adapt within a high emotional environment.
Proficient word processing skills, and exceptional ability to letter write and modify templates.
The role involves working with clients from infancy, to senior Australians. You will need a highly empathetic and compassionate personality, combined with emotional resilience to difficult situations.
Have a developed understanding of the major Government support programs (NDIS, Centrelink, My Aged Care) their policies and procedures, as they impact on individuals and families affected by a brain cancer diagnosis.
Desirable
Preference will be given to those with lived experience in Brain Cancer, albeit clinical or personal or experience working with people living with a terminal disease and understanding of their support-care needs.
Demonstrated understanding of the impact of a terminal illness with cognitive and physical deficits on family and carers
Conditions of Employment
Full-Time, 35 hours per week (remote - work from home)
Appointment to the position is subject to a satisfactory police and working with children’s check prior to employment.

Salary
$49 per hour (equivalent to total salary of $89,180 per annum) with salary packaging options available
Offered as a 12 month contract with the possibility of becoming a permanent role
