Directions Health Services is an innovative non-profit organisation that has been providing specialist alcohol and other drug (AOD) services in the ACT and NSW for more than 40 years. Pathways Murrumbidgee is one of Directions’ programs. It offers a range of community-based treatment and support services to people impacted by AOD and co-occurring issues in Griffith, Wagga, and the surrounding region.

Directions provides a comprehensive suite of holistic AOD, mental health and primary health services that aim to reduce harms experienced by individuals, families and communities and improve overall health and wellbeing. Our Directions’ team includes Counsellors, Social Workers, a Psychologist, Chemists, GPs, Registered Nurses, and a Psychiatrist.

Our capacity to implement innovative services developed in collaboration with our clients, partners, and other stakeholders, enables us to effectively respond to the changing needs of the communities we serve.

This is a full time, fixed term 6-month contract.

About the position

The Community Events and Health Education Officer, working under the guidance of the Directions Team Leader, will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and supporting the delivery of a variety of community events and educational sessions. These initiatives are designed to provide accessible information about local alcohol and other drug (AOD) services, along with relevant health supports related to AOD use, across the Griffith and Leeton region. This role is key to building community awareness, fostering inclusive and respectful dialogue, and delivering meaningful education to a broad range of community members—including individuals who use alcohol and other drugs, their families, health professionals, sporting groups, and the wider public.

Other responsibilities

Plan, coordinate, and deliver community events and education activities to raise awareness of alcohol and other drug (AOD) services and harm reduction strategies across the Griffith and Leeton region.

Aid with provision of accurate, inclusive, and culturally safe health education to priority populations, including people with lived experience of AOD use, families, young people, and marginalised groups.

Engage collaboratively with peers, peer workers, community organisations, and health services to co-design and deliver events and initiatives that reflect lived experience and support evidence-based education.

Liaise with local stakeholders to enhance the reach and impact of community engagement and education activities.

Support the collection and reporting of feedback, outcomes, and evaluation data to inform continuous improvement and meet funding requirements.

Promote and contribute to a continuous quality improvement and safety framework

Maintain professional standards in relation to service delivery and confidentiality and work in accordance with health and safety guidelines

Participate in staff meetings, supervision, and shared care meetings

After hours work may be required

What we would like you to have

Experience in planning and delivering events, preferably within a community health, harm reduction, or not-for-profit setting

Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including experience engaging with diverse populations

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Commitment to inclusive, strengths-based, and non-judgemental approaches to AOD use and support

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and event management tools

Knowledge of AOD harm reduction principles, public health promotion, or related fields is desirable

Valid driver’s licence

All appointments will be conditional upon having suitable rights to work in Australia, a Working with Children Check, current First Aid and CPR certification, a satisfactory National Police Check and Driver’s Licence.
