Where you'll be working
Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. What you'll be doing
The Aboriginal Health Education Officer works with Aboriginal communities in western Sydney and is primarily responsible for health promotion, education and programs. This includes specific men's and women's business, smoking cessation groups, health nutrition workshops and groups, healthy cooking classes for a variety of the community.

The position works collaboratively with relevant services across WSLHD and other external agencies in the planning, implementation and evaluation of Aboriginal specific early intervention and / or prevention health education resources, tools and programs that may need to be developed for the local Aboriginal communities across WSLHD to ensure culturally responsive and appropriate service delivery to the local Aboriginal community.

This includes working closely with Western Sydney Diabetes and Western Sydney PHN in designing specific programs including on immunisation and chronic and complex health care issues which assist in Closing the Gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people in western Sydney. The aim is to reduce the impact of chronic disease and illness on Aboriginal people and improve health outcomes and quality of life.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualification: qualification in social sciences, health or related field.
  • Evidence of Diversity claim: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Selection Criteria:

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Relevant qualifications in social sciences, health or related field.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and have established links with their local Aboriginal community.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of health issues that affect Aboriginal communities and strategies to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and / or experience in developing, implementing, reviewing, and evaluating culturally appropriate health education / health promotion / community development programs and initiatives to Aboriginal communities.
  6. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain successful partnerships with relevant partners including government and non-government organisations and community based organisations.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team with excellent organisational, written and verbal communication skills.
  8. Current Drivers Licence valid within New South Wales and the willingness and ability to travel.
