The Role

The APS 4 Business Support Officer (BSO) will be responsible for the provision of administrative support to the Tasmanian, Australian Army Cadet (AAC) Battalion. Primary responsibilities include:

  • The administration of the AAC’s online business application CadetNet.
  • Processing of Adult Cadet Staff applications, travel, reimbursements and allowances.
  • Assisting with ADF personnel administration and oversight of the AAC’s electronic records management system.

Secondary responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the administration of the AAC’s online business applications on CadetNet for Victorian Brigade

Additionally, the BSO will assist in processing youth safety clearance checks, which are critical to ensuring the AAC meets its mandatory Defence Youth Safety Framework obligations. The BSO must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse staff groups, including Defence personnel, APS, volunteers, and have an ability to work with youth.

About our Team

The TAS AAC Battalion is responsible for the management and support of some 300 cadets operating from nine Community Based Units across northern and southern Tasmania. The TAS AAC Battalion Headquarters is predominantly staffed by Army Reserve personnel managing the functions of operations, personnel, training and logistics, working to the Battalion Commander, an Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel. The fulltime staff of the headquarters comprises an APS6 Executive Officer/ Formation Safety Advisor, a Regular Army Operations Warrant Officer, and the APS 4 Business Support Officer (BSO).

The Battalion also consists of Army Cadet Staff (ACS), who are the adult volunteer group that delivers the youth development program. ACS wear a military uniform, but are not required to hold military qualifications. The Cadets range from the age of 13, when they enter the Australian Army Cadets, to 18, when they ‘retire’ from the program. The BSO will have ongoing and frequent interaction with all of these groups within the Battalion, including interaction with Cadets during key activities and events.

To succeed in this role you must be a self-starter and have personal drive and integrity with a demonstrable ability to:

  • Be able to monitor and track the progress of multiple assigned tasks.
  • Have strong communication skills and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be able to prioritise tasks and shift priorities quickly, and deliver outcomes as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products including intermediate skills in Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to learn personnel systems.
