The Position
Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic is seeking an experienced practice nurse to provide maternity leave cover for 11-12 months. The role is for 3 days per week, commencing in late August. There is also a strong likelihood of an ongoing, permanent part-time practice nurse position due to the planned retirement of our other practice nurse next year.
Practice Nurse Role at Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic
The Practice Nurse role is critical to the success of Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic in its desire to provide its patients with access to high quality and affordable skin cancer diagnosis and management in a timely fashion. His/her primary purpose is to participate in the clinical care of patients, including wound care, assistance with clinical procedures and patient education. The nurse also supports the broader running of the Clinic by assisting administration staff regarding patient recalls and giving of patient results under the direction of the medical staff. The practice nurse will report to the practice manager/office manager and has the following key responsibilities:
Assisting the medical staff with clinical procedures, including set up and clean up, wound care and the giving of patient results
Cleaning of medical instruments, including on-site sterilising
Managing medical emergencies together with the medical staff, as needed
Liaising with other health care providers (such as general practitioners, medical/surgical specialists and/or radiology/pathology providers) with professionalism and discretion, as needed
Assisting administration staff with maintaining business inventories (e.g. invoices, stocks/supplies ordering, or scheduling equipment maintenance/repair), as needed
Answering incoming telephone calls in a courteous and helpful manner, as needed
Scheduling patient appointments, as needed
Assisting with patient payments, as needed
Maintaining confidentiality of all doctor, staff and patient information
Other duties as needed
Job Specifics
Job type - 11-12 month maternity contract +/- ongoing permanent part-time thereafter as outlined above
Award – Nurses Award 2020 (EN Pay Point 4 or higher; RN1 Pay Point 2 or higher)
Superannuation – 11.5% (rising to 12% from 1/7/25)
Work Location – East Lismore, NSW
Work Hours – 22 hours per week
Travel Requirements – none
Parking - free on-site car park for staff and patients
Weekend work hours - Nil
Candidate Qualifications
The Practice Nurse should have the following qualifications:
Current registration with AHPRA as an EN or RN (Required)
Current membership with Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) (Preferred)
Completion of Practice Nursing Program or equivalent (Preferred)
Completion of wound management short course (Preferred)
Candidate Skills and Attributes
The Practice Nurse should have the following skills and attributes:
Proficiency in English
Proficiency in wound care, especially surgical wounds and dressings
Assuring quality patient care by adhering to relevant therapeutic and medical standards/regulations, as well as practice policies and procedures
Maintaining a safe and clean working environment by complying with relevant procedures, rules and regulations, including infection control processes
Medication administration as directed by the patient’s treating medical officer
Documenting patient care in the electronic clinical record to a high standard
Knowledge of computer systems and electronic equipment, including common office software
High level communication (including oral and written), listening and people management skills
High level time management skills, including the ability to work independently, prioritise tasks and integrate work content/timing with the needs of other staff members, as required
High level problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to a problem, and the preparedness to seek assistance when needed
High level ability to monitor own performance and to make improvements/adjustments as needed
High level interpersonal perceptiveness, including awareness of others’ perspectives/reactions, managing an angry patient, or the initial handling of a patient complaint
Commitment to continuing professional development

Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic
Skin cancer is seen as Australia’s national cancer, with 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with it by the age of 70 years. As such, there is a growing demand for experienced and dedicated skin cancer services. Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic provides full skin checks and spot checks, together with a comprehensive range of skin cancer treatment options, including both surgical and non-surgical methods.
The Clinic's Director is Dr Tristan Hicks, a specialist GP who has worked full time in skin cancer diagnosis and management since 2015, and has had extensive training in skin cancer, completing several advanced courses in its diagnosis and management. He is joined by two other skin cancer GPs.
Summerland Skin Cancer Clinic is centrally located in East Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, and services the people of Lismore, Casino, Kyogle, Alstonville, Ballina, Byron Bay, Evans Head and surrounding areas. Our region is a beautiful mix of scenic coast and emerald countryside, and only an hour south of the Gold Coast. The Clinic is part of the region's broader health care network, which includes both public and private hospitals. The Northern Rivers is also well serviced by multiple good public and private schools, a university, an airport and multiple shopping centres.
