What is the role?

The CIO Command provides corporate application, ICT end to end solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpin AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler for all Commands across the AFP. The products and services delivered are user focused, secure and fit for purpose, while supported by a highly skilled, agile and resilient workforce. The CIO Command comprises of four branches; Technology Strategy and Data, Enterprise and Policing Systems, Chief Technology Officer and Cyber Security and Risk.

Chief Technology Officer branch is seeking highly skilled and strategic Infrastructure Strategy Technologists to lead the design, implementation, and evolution of our enterprise infrastructure platforms. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of our IT environment by aligning technology strategy with business goals, ensuring performance, security, and scalability across our systems.

The ideal candidates will possess a balanced blend of hands-on technical expertise and high-level strategic planning experience in infrastructure modernization, network architecture, cloud technologies, and emerging infrastructure trends.

As a Technical Specialist in the AFP, you will ensure the achievement of outcomes are in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. Technical Specialists provide expert consultancy within their area of specialism. They develop and promote technical solutions which support the business requirements of the AFP, within their area of expertise.

A Technical Specialist role does not hold any leadership or financial delegations.

What will you do?

As a Infrastructure Technology Strategist your Key Responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead the practice of technical infrastructure solution design, including the development of new technical solutions.
  • Support and roadmap established enterprise capabilities and patterns within the organization, through consideration of key stakeholder requirements, IT Architecture policies, standards and guidelines and Enterprise Architecture strategy and roadmaps to ensure that solutions are fit-for-purpose.
  • Identify any potential technology innovations and engage with stakeholder partners to develop implementation strategies.
  • Document all work using any required standards, methods, and tools including internally developed toolsets.
  • Cultivate technical excellence across the Chief Technology Officer branch.
  • Offer guidance and support to foster skills enhancement and professional growth for staff members.

In addition, Technical Specialists play a major part in:

Governance, Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Establish and enforce governance frameworks for network and infrastructure decision-making, architecture reviews, and technology standards.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal security protocols (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001, GDPR).

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Act as a senior advisor to executive leadership on network and infrastructure architecture strategy.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in the planning and execution of major infrastructure programs and transformation efforts.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed documentation, including diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
  • Provide regular reports on performance, capacity, and security posture.

Technical Leadership:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and mentorship to team members.
  • Lead technical discussions and strategy sessions.

Troubleshooting and Support:

  • Address issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • High Proficiency in Design/integration of complex enterprise environments based on Active Directory/Entra ID.
  • High Proficiency in Microsoft IaaS/PaaS/SaaS: Azure Entra ID, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, System Center Suite.
  • High Proficiency in Virtualisation: VMware, Hyper-V, Citrix, Horizon.
  • High Proficiency in Security Technologies: Trellix, SkyHigh, Defender, Sentinel.
  • Superior stakeholder engagement skills, with a proven ability to negotiate and influence.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill.

Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

  • Tertiary qualification or industry certification in related field, such as Information Technology, computer science or similar.
  • Ability to lead the infrastructure and integration solution design taking into account key stakeholder requirements.
  • Greater understanding of IT Architecture policies, standards, guidelines, enterprise architecture strategy and roadmaps to ensure that solutions are fit-for-purpose.
  • Demonstrated Understanding and implementation of ISM, PSPF and security best practice frameworks.

Additional Information

  • This position is an AFP Technical Specialist - Band 4 level.
  • This position has been advertised in multiple locations, however the role is located in Canberra and applicants are expected to be based in Canberra. Successful applicants must be willing to relocate at their own expense.
