This is a Part-time (0.6 FTE) permanent role 21 hours/week. Available for immediate start.

Remuneration and Benefits

Level 4 SCHADS Award;

$88,106.20 - $94,803.80 per annum excluding super and attractive salary packaging options ($52,863.72 - $56,882.28 per annum at 0.6 FTE);

Four weeks of annual leave per annum plus leave loading

Two weeks paid leave during the Christmas closure.

All employees are eligible to salary sacrifice a portion of their base salary (up to $15,900).

Caxton Community Legal Centre is a community legal centre whose purpose is to promote and protect human rights in Queensland through access to justice. Caxton provides accessible legal information so people know their rights and can prevent or respond to legal problems. Prioritising those who experience disadvantage, trauma and marginalisation, Caxton provides free, high-quality legal assistance and social supports.

The Paralegal – Evening Advice Service provides paralegal and administrative supports to staff and volunteers at the Evening Advice Service and contributes to the provision of high quality, accessible legal advice and social supports by the Evening Advice Service.

Key accountabilities

Provide paralegal supports to the EAS Lawyer and volunteer lawyers including by assisting with taking instructions, legal tasks, sending out advice to clients, making appropriate internal and external referrals, undertaking legal research and providing practical assistance as they deliver services to clients.

Conduct reception duties at the evening advice service in a way that is trauma-informed and promotes the human rights of people accessing Caxton's service.

Undertake administrative tasks including data entry, file management, conflict checking, monitoring an email inbox.

Assist the EAS Lawyer with the smooth running of the EAS, including by troubleshooting IT issues, ensuring access to the office and being a point of contact for volunteers, clients and students.

Assist the Managing Senior Lawyer and EAS Lawyer with administrative tasks related to the functioning of the Evening Advice Service as directed.

Assist the Managing Senior Lawyer, EAS Lawyer and Volunteer Coordinator with recruitment, retention and rostering of volunteer lawyers and students as directed.

Provide administrative supports across Caxton’s teams as required

Essential requirements

Availability to work at the Evening Advice Sessions which operate Monday to Wednesday with clients booked from 6pm until late.

Strong communication skills, particularly in obtaining information from clients

A high level of computer literacy and competency in major administration software packages such as Microsoft (Outlook, Excel, Word) and SharePoint,

Good organisational and time management skills,

Ability to appropriately deal with sensitive and highly confidential information with a high level of tact, discretion and judgement,

Experience managing complex client demands in a way that is trauma informed and promotes human rights and demonstrated resilience when supporting clients receiving legal and social support.

Depending on health laws and regulations, vaccinations can be mandatory in order to work with vulnerable clients and/or be in the workplace. For example, some clients live in residential age care facilities which at times are required by law/regulation to ensure visitors are vaccinated and wear personal protective equipment.
