Do you want to make a positive impact on the community and environment while enjoying a great work life balance?

Join the Team Shaping Western Australia's Environmental Future!

The Department is seeking to establish a talent pool of experienced Principal Environmental Officers to fill both immediate and future opportunities within our EPA Services branch.

The EPA Services directorate plays a vital role in supporting the independent Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in delivering high-quality environmental impact assessments and strategic advice to the Minister for Environment.

As Principal Environmental Officer, you’ll contribute to the protection of Western Australia’s unique environment by preparing assessments under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act, advising on cumulative impacts, and developing statutory policies and strategic guidance. Your work will directly support the EPA Board, its Chair, and members in making informed, science-based decisions.

Our directorate operates across two key streams:

The Office of the EPA, which leads strategy, guidance, business services, and stakeholder engagement.

Major Project Assessments, which drives the delivery of environmental impact assessments for significant proposals.

We currently have multiple permanent positions available within the below branches.

Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Strategy and Guidance

The Principal Environmental Officer within EPA Strategy and Guidance Branch is responsible for leading the design, development and coordination of EPA environmental policies and procedures associated with the functions of EPA under the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

You are responsible for the management, coordination and supervision of projects related to the EPA Strategic Plan and policy suite. This role will be required to provide detailed scientific advice and strategic thinking in order to contribute to the development and implementation of policies, strategies, systems and processes to support the functions of the EPA.

The Principal Environmental Officer liaises, consults and negotiates on environmental matters with a range of stakeholder groups from within the department, across government and within industry and the community.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

The Principal Environmental Officer within the EIA North and South Branch is responsible for assessing state significant, complex and controversial assessment and post assessment proposals.

You are required to be a subject matter expert on environmental impact assessment and provide training, mentoring, and leadership to other environmental officers within the branch. This position supports the Branch Manager with the provision of scientific advice, the development and implementation of improvement initiatives, and dealing with high priority matters. From time to time, this role will work on key government initiatives and/or continuous improvement projects.

This position liaises, consults, and negotiates on environmental matters with a range of diverse stakeholder groups from across department, government, industry, and the community.

As a department we recognise that flexible working arrangements support effective work-life balance, empowers our people and increases team productivity. We are committed to creating an equitable and diverse workforce that promotes an inclusive and supportive workplace environment. We value the unique diversity of experience that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women and youth bring to our workforce.
