The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Assistant - Flow Cytometry to join the Antiviral Immunity Laboratory team at Burnet!

In this role you will contribute to research projects on immune responses to infections and vaccines in healthy and immunocompromised people and post-acute infection syndromes. You will perform high quality immunology-based laboratory research, including performing immunophenotyping using multi-parameter spectral flow cytometry and developing new assays. You will also contribute to and/or lead the preparation of scientific reports for publications and ethical approval progress reports.

You will also:

  • Conduct research according to an agreed research plan.
  • Securely store and compile research data complying with ethical guidelines for human research and undertake analysis according to agreed plans.
  • Contribute to the training and supervision of research students and junior staff where applicable.

This is a 12-month fixed term position, with a possibility of extension. We are open to candidates seeking part-time and full-time options (0.6 - 1.0 FTE). Please refer to the position description here:

Let's talk about you

The following criteria are essential requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science or Biomedical Sciences with Honours (or equivalent).
  • Experience in laboratory-based biomedical research.
  • Demonstrated experience with biospecimen processing and biobanking of human blood and/or tissue samples.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-parameter spectral flow cytometry.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing immunological assay/s and competence in assay development.
  • Excellent organisation skills, record keeping and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Competent with standard software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

The following are preferable but not essential:

  • Experience preparation of ethics applications and related approvals.
  • Experience in REDCAP instrument design and data entry skills.
  • Experience in tissue culture and/or cell biology and/or molecular biology.
  • Knowledge of immunology and/or infectious diseases or virology.
