Job description:

The Transgender Health Research team at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is seeking a Part Time Research Assistant (Lived Experience) to support exciting and meaningful research activities for the Australian Research Consortium for Transgender Youth and Children (ARCTYC).

This is a unique opportunity to contribute your lived experience and voice to a growing body of work that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse young people across Australia.

About the role:

As the Research Assistant (Lived Experience), you'll work alongside a passionate team of researchers—both trans and cis—on a range of projects, primarily focusing on comparing different models of gender-affirming care (Stream 4), with opportunities to support work across all four research streams.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to ethics applications and participant recruitment
  • Supporting and conducting interviews and surveys with trans and gender diverse young people
  • Assisting with data analysis and preparing research outputs such as plain language summaries, presentations, and academic articles
  • Providing administrative and logistical support
  • Bringing a lived perspective to all stages of the research process


About your new team

ARCTYC brings together over 60 researchers, clinicians, and community members across Australia to improve outcomes for trans and gender diverse children and young people. Our four research streams aim to build a national evidence base that supports gender-affirming care.

The Trans Health Research Group at MCRI includes both trans and cis researchers committed to ethical, collaborative research led by lived experience.

What we need from you:

  • Aged 18-25
  • Lived experience as a trans or gender diverse person
  • Currently studying or experienced in a relevant field (e.g. psychology, social work, peer work, health, youth work)
  • Confidence in using lived experience to guide meaningful research
  • Passion for the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse young people
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable, motivated, and able to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent organisation, time management, and attention to detail
  • Respect for privacy, professionalism, and ethical research practice
