The School Nurse assists with promoting and protecting the health of the students, staff, and visitors. They monitor the health status of the school's population and provide first aid care in lined with the response to illness and injury flow chart.

Administration of Medicines

Administer medicines and drugs to students in accordance with the student's individual medical health/management plan

Safely store and record all medications on site

Ensure medications are not passed their used by date and discard correctly if they are

Ensure Asthma and Epipen bags are updated annually and allocated per student.

Responsibilities

Provide first aid to students, staff and visitors following the response to illness and injury flow chart

Personal health appraisals of students to reassure those who are health and identify children at risk of conditions which may affect their health and learning

Refer student who require medical treatment to their appropriate medical service and notify parents as soon as practicable.

Attend to medical emergencies of students and staff and provide first aid and support, as according to the Illness and Injury Flowchart.

Support teachers, non-teaching staff and parents by explaining the special characteristics and needs of student with chronic recurring illness or disabilities

Liaise with parents/school staff/health professionals regarding students identified with health and wellbeing issues to ensure their needs are met

Organise immunisations for staff as required

Facilitate School based immunisation program with the Darebin and Whittlesea Council Immunisation services.

Conduct Anaphylaxis briefings to all staff and any other nursing/medical briefings required

Book First Aid staff training and ensure staff certifications are in date

Administration Duties

Display health promotion, first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma posters around the School.

Selectively participate in health education programs in the School and with parent groups when appropriate

Maintain accurate and confidential staff and student records

In accordance with School policies and procedures, liaise with teachers, counsellors, doctors, students and parents

Liaise with other services in the community to ensure the best care for staff and students

Review and update policies and procedures as required

Such other duties as may be required for time to time

Regularly check and maintain AED¿s and First Aid kits at school.

Maintain medical supplies in the School Health Centre/ First Aid Rooms

Request annual review of Action Plans from parents

Attend First Aid meetings with parents/ staff as required and assist in the development of School Medical / Health Support Plans/ Anaphylaxis Support Plans

Ensure classrooms receive updated student medical information

Qualifications, Registrations and Experience

Qualifications & Registrations

Current accreditation as a Registered Nurse in Australia

Anaphylaxis and Asthma Qualifications

Administration of Immunisations certificate (preferred)

Current Working with Children's Check

Current Police Check

Current First Aid, HLTAID003

Current Drivers, Licence

Epilepsy , Administer Emergency Medication Accreditation (or willing to get)

Experience

Minimum of 2 years, experience in a similar role

Diabetes knowledge and experience preferred

Work experience in the education sector (preferable)

Experienced in safe manual handling practices

Proven ability to work with stakeholder groups to complete required tasks across varied contexts

Confident in working autonomously and in a team setting to produce quality outcomes

Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively to deliver on priorities

Applicants must complete the following Selection Criteria:

KSC 1 Demonstrated experience and skills in clinical nursing assessment to meet the first aid and special needs of children, staff and visitors in the school.

KSC 2 Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner.

KSC 3 Hold current nursing qualifications and have a comprehensive knowledge/treatment of Diabetes, Anaphylaxis, Allergies, Asthma and Epilepsy.

KSC 4 Highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people.

School Overview

Northern School for Autism is a Victorian State Government specialist school that exclusively addresses the educational needs of students with autism ranging in age from 5 to 18 years. The school was established in 2006 and currently operates across two campuses located in Reservoir and Lalor. Reservoir is an Early and Middle Years campus; Lalor is a Later Years campus. The school also coordinates a satellite program at Norris Bank Primary School. Class-groups generally comprise of six to ten students of similar chronological age. Teachers, teacher aides and therapists (speech pathologists and occupational therapists) work in teams of two or three in each classroom, supported by specialist teachers (PE, Art and Music) as well as a team of leading teachers.

School Structure

The school is divided into sub-schools according to the stages of schooling (ages approximate):

• Early Years ~ 5 – 8 years.

• Middle Years ~ 9 – 14 years.

• Later Years ~ 15 – 18 years.

Teaching and Learning

Northern School for Autism implements a teaching approach that builds on individual student’s strengths and skills. The educational programs accommodate the particular impairments associated with autism; teaching and learning programs centre upon developing students’ interpersonal/personal skills, communication skills and executive functioning. Emphasis is placed on promoting social skills, assisting students develop their imagination and play skills, as well as supporting students learn to manage and self-regulate their emotions and behaviour. Programs are designed to accommodate individual student’s needs and interests. Teachers are trained in autism specific pedagogy (structured teaching) and work in accordance with the autism specific Northern School for Autism, Teaching and Learning Protocols. Staff members deliver programs in a consistent, autism ‘friendly’ manner across the whole school. All students are encouraged and supported to become independent, life-long learners. NSA is proud to implement a School-wide Positive Behaviour Support approach.

I am very proud to be the principal of Northern School for Autism. Across the two campuses of NSA a dedicated team of 140 staff members provide autism specific educational programs, for 270 students from 5 to18 years of age. Each campus community is supported by a leadership team who oversees the implementation of the curriculum and daily operations of each campus.

The Reservoir Campus provides state of the art facilities for the Early and Middle Years’ students. The Later Years’ students attend the refurbished Lalor Campus, which is located close to transport, community services and shopping precincts. In 2015 the school opened a satellite program at Norris Bank Primary School.
