About the National Gallery of Australia
Our client, the National Gallery of Australia, is one of Australia’s leading visual arts institutions and is a vital part of the Australian cultural landscape. When you work at the National Gallery, you will be exposed to some of the world’s leading Australian and international art and artists. They are located in the parliamentary triangle on the waterfront and your lunchtimes can be spent in the beautiful sculpture garden or around Lake Burley Griffin.
This national cultural institution is a workplace of choice for Canberrans with their great culture, strong support for flexible working practices including working from home, and provision of low-cost, onsite car parking.
The Opportunity
There is a unique vacancy available for an EL1 Online Store Project Manager to join the Commercial Operations Department and report to the Health of Commercial Operations. The Gallery is launching an online retail store operation in June 2026, and this role will be pivotal in preparing for its successful launch ensuring it is commercially focused and supports a memorable visitor experience. The Gallery’s merchandising is an area with significant opportunities to be explored and developed over the short to medium term.
It’s rare to find a commercially focused role like this in a government setting. You’ll be key player in ensuring that the pilot online store is fit for purpose and provides a small-scale online presence. The purpose of the pilot store is to test the effectiveness of different products and strategies and to ultimately build a business case for further online expansion.
The role is a full-time 18-month non-ongoing contract vacancy.
The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Develop an online retail project plan, with a particular focus on stocking Gallery products with alignment to the National Collection and the exhibitions program
- Oversee the procurement of an inventory management system that enables an optimised shopping experience both online and onsite
- You will engage and enthuse key stakeholders in the Art Store team and the broader Gallery in relation to the development of a pilot online store
- Provide advice on potential adaptations that could be made to accommodate online store requirements and to flag potential issues and limitations of solutions proposed by others
- Improve business outcomes by keeping up to date on emerging retail trends and undertaking consumer research and peer feedback to inform decisions on the development of online National Gallery products
The Ideal Person
The ideal candidate will have experience managing retail operations ideally in an art, design or museum environment, backed up by experience in project management and procurement. An understanding of the retail e-commerce landscape is highly desirable.
Other key competences include:
- Understanding of procurement processes, including sourcing strategies, vendor evaluation and contract management
- Familiarity with online store platforms, product listing management and order fulfilment systems and processes
- Well organised, show initiative and confidently manage competing priorities
- High attention to detail and bring strong commercial acumen to drive commercial returns in the Art Store
To be eligible for the role, you must be an Australian citizen and be willing to undergo a police check. A security clearance isn’t required for the role.
Salary / Rate
- $112k - $134k + 15.4% Super (depending on experience)
- Full-time 18-month non-ongoing contract vacancy
- Canberra based position
