The Museum Café is located within the iconic Mareeba Heritage Centre, a not-for profit organisation for purpose to enhance visitor’s and the community’s experience of the Mareeba district through the preservation and promotion of our culture and heritage; and to motivate visitors and locals to explore the culture and diversity of Mareeba, the Tablelands and Outback.
As we transition the onsite café to new management under the Mareeba Heritage Centre Inc. from 1 July 2025, we are looking for dynamic and experienced Cafe Manager and/or Chef/Cook to complete our team and deliver an exceptional customer experience.
Our opening hours are 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday.
Ideally, we are looking for a Cafe Manager who is also a Chef/Experienced Cook however, it is not an essential requirement. Candidates can apply for either position.
As Cafe Manager - What you'll be doing
The Café Manager will work closely with the Mareeba Heritage Centre team to integrate the café with the Museum experience, driving revenue while enhancing tourism and community involvement. This is a full-time role that requires a hands-on approach, creativity in menu development and social media marketing.
As the Café Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Museum Cafe, ensuring high standards of customer service, staff management, and profitability. You will play a key role in integrating the café with the Museum experience, offering visitors a seamless blend of food, culture, and hospitality.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a community-focused café while making a positive impact on Mareeba’s tourism and cultural landscape.
What we're looking for
The successful applicant will have:
At least 1-2 years in a similar position – with a further background in hospitality
Deep understanding of cafe operations, staff management, and customer expectations
A love and strong understanding of coffee, food and the café culture in Australia
Initiative, passion and the drive to deliver the highest standard of customer service
Excellent communication skills towards staff, customers and suppliers
The ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks effectively
Flexible availability – this is a full-time position and you will be required to work ideally weekdays and weekends on a 5 days/week roster. Occasional evening work for events.
As Chef/Experienced Cook - What you'll be doing
Preparing and cooking a variety of dishes, savoury and sweet treats for the café
Occasional catering for events
Ensuring all food is prepared to the highest standards of quality and presentation
Maintaining a clean and organised kitchen environment
Collaborating with the team to develop new menu items and improve existing recipes
Adhering to all food safety and hygiene regulations
Providing excellent customer service and responding to customer requests
What we're looking for
This position requires you to be available to work weekends and on full time hours, with occasional evening work for events.
Passion for food and cooking, using seasonal and local ingredients
Reproduce our menu consistently according to local and seasonal produce
Strong knowledge of food preparation, technical skills combined with creativity
Able to work in an organised constructive manner and able to multitask
Ideally hold relevant qualifications and prior experience working with a Cafe
