About the Role
As a Fisheries Technician, you will work within a collaborative team to collect and analyze fish samples, ensuring data integrity and adherence to established sampling protocols. Your role will involve both field and laboratory work, including measuring fish length, determining sex, removing otoliths, and collecting tissue samples for genetic analysis. You will also assist in estimating fish age by examining otoliths through scientific preparation techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Work in a team environment to assist the collection of samples and data from Queensland's fisheries, following documented sampling protocols.
- Carry out processing of samples of fish (frames) in the field and laboratory, including measuring length, determining sex, removing otoliths and collecting tissue samples for genetic analyses.
- Prepare otoliths for further examination (i.e. reading), including blocking in resin, sectioning using a high or low speed saw and mounting sections onto glass slides.
- Help estimate the age of a fish by reading whole or sectioned otoliths.
- Communicate well with other team members and stakeholders about sampling activities.
- Apply high levels of scientific accuracy during sample and data collection, while maintaining integrity and respecting commercial, recreational, charter and indigenous sensitivities.
- Exercise tact and discretion with colleagues and stakeholders and pass on important information to your supervisor and senior staff in an appropriate manner.
- Assist other groups in Fisheries Queensland with priority work, as required.
- Other standard technical duties as required.
Mandatory Requirements
Associate Diploma in Science, Applied Science or Rural Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualification.
A current Queensland 'C' class drivers licence
The ability to travel away from home for periods of up to a week
Desirable Requirements:
* Experience in conducting fisheries surveys (lab and field work) to collect scientific data (highly desirable).
* A good understanding of Office 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, Excel and Sharepoint (highly desirable).
* The ability to identify target and non-target species, caught in Queensland's fisheries (highly desirable).
* Understanding of Queensland' commercial and recreational fisheries.
* Current first aid certification (desirable).
* Elements of shipboard safety training (desirable)
