Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is a leading cultural organisation in the Northern Territory and its only symphony orchestra.

Based in Darwin, DSO is recognised as a centre for distinctive artistic work and aims to present and promote inspirational orchestral music to local, national and international audiences.

A vibrant and innovative orchestra, DSO has a dedicated group of more than one hundred volunteer musicians and a small core of paid professional musicians. Our location has seen the orchestra deliver artistic and educational programs that are responsive to the Northern Territory’s unique culture and geography for over 30 years.

DSO has established a reputation for collaborating with a wide range of artists and arts organisations, broadening our reach and enriching our work. These collaborations centre NT First Nations artists and stories, music, dance, poetry, singing and visual media, giving audiences and participants a distinctive experience that celebrates our cultural context.

About the Role

The Marketing and Development Coordinator plays an essential part in the DSO team - coordinating communications, maintaining the organisation’s online presence, working strategically to engage with our audience, philanthropic, government, and corporate supporters, and assisting with event requirements.

We’re looking for someone who is self-driven and proactive, with the ability to lead all marketing and communications of DSO. The marketing side of this role includes managing and coordinating marketing materials, communications with audiences via social media, our website and e-newsletters. The development side of this role supports critical philanthropic, sponsorship, and business development activity of the organisation by producing and managing communications with partners organisations to help DSO grow.

KEY DUTIES

MARKETING

  • Independently manage all publicity requirements for DSO events, including development of promotional materials, ad bookings, media releases and digital marketing
  • Create media kits and leadmedia opportunities
  • Liaise with designers to develop promotional materials
  • Simple design tasks, such as creating social media and website banners as required (e.g. through Canva)
  • Produce and manage content for website, social media and electronic-direct mail (EDMs)
  • Assist with ad hoc event requirements, including front of house duties
  • Coordinate and send concert and event invitations, seating and VIP lists
  • Assist in maintaining company records, including data for annual reports
  • Establish and maintain CRM (customer relationship management) database: for patrons, ticket buyers, VIPs, and other stakeholders
  • Generate other electronic communications to stakeholders, including invitations and monthly enews
  • Coordinate long-term strategic marketing areas including website development and brand development

DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop communications that demonstrate program outcomes, tailored for donors, sponsors, and other partners
  • Support the planning, delivery, monitoring and review of projects and programs to meet reporting requirements
  • Assist with grant writing and funding acquittals
  • Help to identify new funding opportunities with strong strategic alignment to DSO’s objectives and programs
  • Coordinate planning for partner and donor events and engagement strategies
  • Support philanthropic program by managing our Patron (donor) database, helping with donor communications, and keeping records updated
  • Assist with the administration and coordination of annual fundraising campaigns

ADMINISTRATION AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with general office administration, including filing, scanning, mail collection
  • Answer general enquiries from phone, DSO general email, website
  • Maintain positive working relationships with other DSO staff, volunteers and musicians
  • Undertake other duties within the scope of the employee’s skills, competence and training as directed

ABOUT YOU

Essential

  • Exceptional planning, organisational skills, and attention to detail
  • Previous experience producing and proofreading publications (e-newsletters, media releases, marketing materials)
  • Great communicator, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and experience in customer management
  • Experience with electronic marketing communications
  • Excellent computer literacy, with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across a team and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to the needs of a variety of projects and tasks
  • Interest in the arts

Desirable

  • Basic to intermediate design experience
  • Experience writing or assisting with successful grants, funding proposals and reports
  • Previous experience working with databases (Salesforce or similar)
  • Experience maintaining websites (specifically WordPress)
  • Competency in photo and video editing (e.g. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve)
  • Experience in the arts sector

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to General Manager
  • Works closely with Finance Officer, Artistic Director/Chief Conductor; Orchestra & Operations Manager, Concertmaster, and Education and Outreach Coordinator
