Alice Springs Hospital has a catchment area of over 1,000,000 km2. We care for some of the nation’s most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country.
Spectacular national parks surround Alice Springs. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities and the arts. The central desert region of Australia is unique. It is a friendly, welcoming place suited to anyone with a sense of adventure and those interested in indigenous health issues, not generally seen by professionals in other areas of Australia.
Alice Springs Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on indigenous and remote health as a result of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities. Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.
An opportunity exists for a Mental Health Nurse to fill the position within Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs (MHAOD). As a member of a multidisciplinary team, provide therapeutic interventions and education on mental health issues to Mental Health Inpatients & Mental Health Sub-Acute patients and family members.
MHAOD delivers public mental health services through a number of interdependent specialist multi-disciplinary mental health teams based in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. This is a unique and rare opportunity in a highly-interested field within a positive and supportive team environment.
