Your new role
The role of the Environmental Health Officer is to enforce legislation and policy to ensure Council provides best practice compliance services to conserve and enhance the environment of the area for the health and amenity of residents.
- Provide a high-quality investigation service in a number of areas, such as (but not limited to): food safety, public health, unhealthy conditions, pollution incidences (air, land, water, noise, asbestos), offensive odour, sewerage overflow and storm water
- Ensure compliance with legislation by issuing appropriate notices, orders, penalty infringement notices and undertaking prosecutions in accordance with legislation and Council policy in the event of non-compliance
- Act as a community liaison point in relation to enquiries relating to environmental health, including actively promoting and supporting the communities' involvement in assisting Council in environmental health functions, and providing advice and education to the community in relation to activities carried out and Council's responsibilities in the area of environmental health.
- Provide proactive environmental protection and public health routine inspection programs in food safety, skin penetration, legionella control, on-site sewage management systems, erosion and sediment control and environmental audits.
What you'll need to succeed
- Tertiary Qualifications in Applied Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Natural Resources and/or equivalent experience in a similar role.
- Thorough working knowledge of appropriate sections of the Local Government Act 1993, Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Food Act 2003, Food Standards Codes, Public Health Act 2010, and other relevant legislation, codes, guidelines and standards.
- Experience in environmental health assessment of development applications, technical reports and environmental impact statements.
- Demonstrated computer skills and ability to use commercial databases and information registers, including the ability to adapt to new software and systems.
- Investigations experience, evidence gathering and undertaking complex investigations, ideally within a compliance context.
- Current Class C (minimum) Driver's Licence.
What you'll get in return
The position is an initial 6-month contract and could be extended depending on operational requirements of the council and performance.
